Basketball is known for tall people making big plays.
Small mistakes, though, are plaguing Marshall UniversityƵs womenƵs basketball team, which enters its 1 p.m. Saturday game at Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Georgia, with a 6-15 record and 1-9 Sun Belt Conference mark.
That one league victory was against the Eagles (9-13, 2-8), 67-60 on Jan. 22 in Huntington. Since then, each team has gone 0-2.
The Thundering Herd lost 54-48 to Southern Mississippi and 76-64 at Coastal Carolina. Georgia Southern fell 60-56 at Appalachian State and 77-60 versus James Madison.
Marshall coach Juli Fulks said she was disappointed in how the Herd played against the Chanticleers on Wednesday.
ƵWe ran a quick-hitter against the zone we only executed correctly one out of three times, which was really disappointing because we got a wide-open layup,Ƶ Fulks said.
ƵThose little things, itƵs too late in the season not to be executing those things right. Those are the parts that arenƵt really acceptable.Ƶ
Not all was negative. Fulks said she was pleased with the HerdƵs effort.
ƵOutside of JMU, weƵre really defended well the last five games,Ƶ Fulks said. ƵWeƵre giving ourselves chances. If we need only to score 60 to win, we can get there and we will get there.Ƶ
Marshall is led by senior guard Aislynn Hayes, who scores a Sun Belt-best 17 points per game and grabs 4.4 rebounds. Junior Meredith Maier averages 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds a game. She came out of a recent shooting slump with 20 points against Coastal Carolina. C.C. Mays averages 10 points an outing.
Hays scored 25 and Mays netted 17 in the first meeting with the Eagles.
Nicole Gwynn averages 12.4 points a game and Indya Green tallies 12.0 for Georgia Southern. Green netted 14 points and Gwynn seven against the Herd the first time around.
The Eagles committed 22 turnovers against Marshall.
ƵIt was simply the turnovers. We had eight in the quarter, and a lot of them at really critical times,Ƶ Eagles coach Hana Haden said. ƵWe were just forcing things that werenƵt there.Ƶ
