CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Hylton left Marshall University's women's basketball team with bad memories, and it had nothing to do with the Thundering Herd's accommodations.
Tinea Hylton, a 5-foot-7 Canadian who transferred from Texas A&M, scored 16 points to lead Cincinnati (8-2) to a 67-64 victory over Marshall (4-5) Wednesday at Fifth/Third Bank Arena.
Marshall stormed back from a 17-point first half deficit within 65-64 after Timberlynn Yeast's steal and layup with 53 seconds remaining. Brianna Byars, though, sank a pair of free throws with 2 seconds to play to set the score.
The Herd made 15 of 25 shots in the second half after going 7 for 25 in the first 20 minutes. Aislynn Hayes led the comeback, scoring 24 points on 8-for-13 shooting. The senior from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, was the lone Marshall player in double figures in scoring.
Chloe Mann, a freshman guard from Fort Worth, Texas, chipped in 12 points for the Bearcats, who won the game at the foul stripe. Both teams shot 23 free throws, but Cincinnati made 18 to the Herd's 10.
"Free throw shooting certainly could've won us the game," MU coach Juli Fulks said. "The players were upset afterward. We had so many chances. It sounds like a broken record."Â
The Bearcats also took advantage of a 44-28 rebounding edge, scoring 16 second chance points to Marshall's eight.
"Our players never quit," Fulks said. "We got some huge stops, rebounds and steals. We have shooters, so we can make a run."
The second quarter has been a bugaboo for the Herd for much of the season and was again Wednesday. Cincinnati turned a 17-12 lead into a 36-22 advantage by halftime.
Reagan Jackson's pair of foul shots with 4:12 to play in the third period boosted the Bearcats lead to 49-32.
Marshall then began to rally. Hayes swished a 3-pointer to spark an 11-2 run. Cincinnati rebuilt the lead to 12 at 57-45 before Maddie Kellione made a free throw to start an 18-10 run to close the game.
The Herd returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Davis & Elkins (1-9) at Cam Henderson Center. The Senators began the season with nine consecutive losses before beating Point Park 65-51 Saturday.
