Marshall UniversityƵs womenƵs basketball team (7-16) will be fine with that as long as the results are the same when it takes on Central Michigan (9-13) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Cam Henderson Center.
The last time the Thundering Herd and Chippewas played was Jan. 26, 2005. Marshall won that game 79-69 as Crystal Champion and Reshundra Smiley each scored 16 points for then-coach Royce ChadwickƵs Herd.
SaturdayƵs game is part of the Mid-American Conference/Sun Belt Conference Challenge. Marshall was a member of the MAC from 1997 through 2005.
The contest also finishes MUƵs Sweetheart Clinic for girls.
The game is the latest non-conference regular-season contest for Marshall since Jan. 17, 2012, when the Herd lost 67-59 to West Virginia in the Capital Classic in Charleston.
Marshall enters off a 92-88 loss in overtime at Louisiana. It is led by Sun Belt leading scorer Aislynn Hayes, a senior guard averaging 16.5 points per game. Hays is backed by junior guard C.C. Mays, who has totaled 25 and 28 points, respectively, in her last two games and scores 11.4 points an outing.
Meredith Maier, who has battled foot and knee injuries all season, produces 10.1 points a game. Blessing King tops MU rebounders at 5.4 per game.
Central Michigan is coming off a 75-48 rout of Ohio. Madi Morson, a 5-foot-8 freshman guard, scored 23 points in that game and averages 15.6. Ayanna-Sarai Darrington, a 6-2 freshman, scored 21 against the Bobcats and scores 9.1 per game. Jessenia Lawson, a 5-7 senior, scores 11.4 points and pulls down 8.9 rebounds a game.
ƵWeƵre going to be a dangerous team if we focus on defense and (keep) locking in on the game plan like that,Ƶ Chippewas coach Kristin Haynie said in a release of the win over the Bobcats. ƵEveryone got to play and got good minutes. We have to keep that rolling.Ƶ
The Herd and Chippewas share one common opponent Ƶ Toledo. Marshall lost to the Rockets 71-68 on the road in the season opener. Central Michigan fell to Toledo 71-66 on Jan. 11 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
Haynie was a senior star at Michigan State the last time Central Michigan and Marshall played. The second-year coach was the eighth pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft, going to the Sacramento Monarchs. She also played for the Atlanta Dream and Detroit Shock. Before taking over the Chippewas, Haynie was an assistant with the Minnesota Lynx.
