Marshall's men's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to force overtime, but came up short at South Alabama on Thursday, 91-82.
The Thundering Herd (16-10, 8-5) was led by Obinna Anochili-Killenòòò½ÊÓƵ™s 20 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Mikal Dawson scored 18 points on six 3-pointers, and Dezayne Mingo added 14 points and five assists.
South Alabama (17-9, 9-4) was led by Elijah Ormistonòòò½ÊÓƵ™s season-high 26 points and five rebounds. He fouled out in overtime, but the Herd was unable to capitalize.
òòò½ÊÓƵœHeck of a game,òòò½ÊÓƵ Marshall coach Corny Jackson said. òòò½ÊÓƵœThey force you to take a lot of 3s with the 2-3 zone. We took way more than I wouldòòò½ÊÓƵ™ve liked to take, but you have to play the game. We talked about, before the game, not overthinking. Just play. If you overthink it against the zone, you hold the ball, and it stalls. At the end of the day, they made plays and we had a cold shooting stretch.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Marshall saw an early spark from Anochili-Killen, dumping a pair of passes to him inside to lead 4-2.
But the Herd then had a three-minute stretch without a point. A 3-pointer from Speer broke the skid, and Marshall remained within one. A follow-up 3-pointer from Anochili-Killen tied it at 14 with 12:42 left in the first.
The Jaguars' collapsing zone held Marshall to just 20 paint points despite Anochili-Killenòòò½ÊÓƵ™s success.
To compensate for the packed paint, South Alabama allows and plans for opponents' 3-point attempts at a higher rate than any other team in Division I, a rate of 61 òòò½ÊÓƵ“ the national average is 39.2.
It allowed Marshall to get into a rhythm. Jalen Speer and Anochili-Killen had back-to-back 3-pointers, and the Herd started 4 of 7 from deep.
But then it had another drought and trailed by four when Wyatt Fricks converted a 3-point play to end it.
Marshall took 48 3-pointers, making 14.
Down the stretch in the first half, Marshall secured strong looks for Anochili-Killen with mid-range baseline jumpers. He finished with 14 first-half points to lead all scorers, but the Herd trailed 42-36.
South Alabamaòòò½ÊÓƵ™s leading scorer at the break was Barry Dunning. He made each of his final five shots to close the frame with 13 points, outpacing his season average of 12.6.
Forward Elijah Ormiston had 10 as the Jags scored 26 first-half points in the paint and only made one 3-pointer on six shots. The Jags finished the game with 52 points in the paint.
He began to take over for South Alabama in the second half with three consecutive paint buckets. The last make gave the Jags a 10-point lead, 53-43.
The Jags reached the bonus as Marshall picked up its 10th foul at the 13-minute mark, but the Jags only had four fouls at that point. By the end of the night, South Alabama took 33 free throws. Marshall shot 11.
òòò½ÊÓƵœEven if weòòò½ÊÓƵ™re taking 48 3s, I felt like we shouldòòò½ÊÓƵ™ve been on the line a little more," Jackson said. "Iòòò½ÊÓƵ™m not going to call them more physical than us, but they were right there.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Down 62-54 with 12:29 to play in regulation, Marshall scrapped back with an 8-0 run while South Alabama faced a scoring drought of over three minutes. A 3-pointer from Dawson brought the Herd within two points with 7:19 left.
A second-chance layup for Cade Gibbs and another 3-pointer for Mingo gave the Herd a 67-64 advantage with 6:23 to play, its first lead since the 4-2 margin.
Mingo made consecutive buckets to extend Marshall's run to 17-2.
òòò½ÊÓƵœWe fought and made a few timely shots,òòò½ÊÓƵ Jackson said. òòò½ÊÓƵœItòòò½ÊÓƵ™s about putting it together for the whole game.òòò½ÊÓƵ
Down two late, Anochili-Killen's shot after multiple offensive boards drew a goaltending call with 12 seconds left, sending the game to OT tied at 77.
Ormiston picked up his fifth foul with 2:16 left in the overtime period, but the Herd faced a scoring drought of over two minutes, failing to take another lead as it missed nine shots in overtime.
