HUNTINGTON Ƶ Cornelius Jackson blew the whistle and, in that moment, he finally felt like the boss.
ƵItƵs different because you look around and youƵre in charge, for real,Ƶ the Thundering HerdƵs first year menƵs basketball coach said.
ƵBut IƵm a natural leader and have been leading for a long time,: he continued. ƵI have a good staff who are experienced and know what they are doing and then the guys make it easy when they come in ready to work.Ƶ
In the first row of seats in the Cam Henderson Center, Jackson took a moment to reflect on the first team workout of the summer that brought together six veterans and a slew of newcomers as the Herd builds a foundation for the coming season.
ƵIt was good, IƵve been fortunate, like IƵve said all the time, Coach Dan DƵAntoni gave me a lot of freedom when he was here and put me in charge sometimes,Ƶ Jackson said of his predecessor.
DƵAntoni stopped by the practice briefly to chat with a group of around 10 people that had come to watch the team Friday afternoon. Jackson served as the Thundering HerdƵs associate head coach last season before being promoted to replace DƵAntoni.
Jackson entered this first practice as boss with three goals and pulled a wrinkled, folded up sheet of paper out for a little bit of self evaluation once most of the members of the team had made their way back into the locker room.
ƵIf I look at my practice sheet, this has been the theme all week: Every possession is competition, our energy level is high and we are communicating and encouraging,Ƶ Jackson said. ƵI think we did a good job with all of those.Ƶ
Jakob Gibbs, who transferred in from Grace College with his brother Cade this off-season, said he enjoyed JacksonƵs coaching style on day one.
ƵHeƵs awesome, itƵs intense but itƵs a really encouraging kind of intense,Ƶ Gibbs said. ƵHe letƵs you know youƵre messing up but heƵs also going to walk you through how to fix it and will always be there to encourage you through the process.Ƶ
