CHARLESTON Ƶ Bo Miller still has a job.
Spring ValleyƵs girls basketball coach also has a state championship trophy to display while at that job.
ƵI told people at the beginning of the year, if we didnƵt win it, I should be fired,Ƶ Miller said after leading the Timberwolves to a 62-45 victory over Morgantown on Saturday in the ƵSSAC Class AAAA state tournament final at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
ƵWe have a great team and I knew it from the start. I knew it back in the summer. If we played to our potential, the only team that could beat us is if we beat ourselves.Ƶ
The Timberwolves (22-2) played like a great team in all three games of the tournament, clobbering Spring Mills 88-36 and St. Albans 83-49 before walloping the Mohigans (20-4), a team Spring Valley beat by eight points during the regular season.
The difference in the first game with Morgantown and the second?
ƵSophi (Hutchison) only played about a quarter and a half because of foul trouble,Ƶ Miller said of the first meeting.
Hutchison, the tournamentƵs most valuable player after scoring 75 points in the week, netted 24 in the title game to go with five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Her steal and layup to open the third quarter gave the Timberwolves a 38-23 lead, signaling Morgantown was in for more of the same as it experienced in the first half.
More it received. Spring Valley led by 24 points after Ella GilesƵ basket to begin the fourth quarter. The Timberwolves were up 22 with 2:37 remaining and the Mohigans chipped away against the reserves.
ƵI think that steal was crucial and was the turning point,Ƶ Hutchison said. ƵWhen I got that steal, I saw my teammatesƵ faces light up. We kept pushing it that whole third quarter and in the fourth quarter.Ƶ
Morgantown couldnƵt contain HutchisonƵs drive to the basket. The junior guard made 10 of 16 shots and held Morgantown star Kayli Kellogg to 11 points on 3-for-19 shooting.
ƵMy main goal was to keep her from scoring because a lot of their offense is through Kayli,Ƶ Hutchison said. ƵIf I could contain her, that would force other people to score and they donƵt have as much a chance to score as she did.Ƶ
Nor could Morgantown stop Spring Valley senior center Allie Daniels.
ƵBo told me we had to rebound to win, and I had to do what I always do, stay on the boards and get my points,Ƶ said Daniels, who finished with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Morgantown coach John Fowkes said Daniels was a difference-maker underneath, preventing the Mohigans from driving to the basket, no matter MorgantownƵs strategy.
ƵWeƵre usually bigger than the other team, but theyƵre bigger than us in various ways,Ƶ Fowkes said. Ƶ(Daniels) sagged off and we ran cuts through the middle and tried to back screen, but she was always there.Ƶ
Morgantown used lengthy scoring runs in victories over Washington and George Washington in the first two rounds. Fowkes said he expected another against Spring Valley. The Mohigans, though, never scored more than five consecutive points.
ƵThey had shots go in and we didnƵt,Ƶ Fowkes said. ƵWe talked about it at halftime: ƵHey, itƵs going to happen.Ƶ It didnƵt happen. ThatƵs basketball. Shots go in and shots donƵt go in.Ƶ
Brooklyn Ellis scored 13 points for Spring Valley. Dria Parker tallied nine points and five rebounds.
ƵThis is the whole reason I came back as soon as I did,Ƶ Parker said of recovering from July knee surgery. ƵI knew the team could win this and I wanted to be a part of it. I pushed myself for five months straight.Ƶ
Tatum DeVries paced Morgantown with 16 points and eight rebounds. Sadaya Jones scored seven points and snared nine rebounds.
Until Saturday, just two girls teams from Wayne County had won state titles Ƶ Buffalo in 1993 and Fort Gay in 1976. That number doubled, as Wayne defeated Nitro 56-39 earlier Saturday in the Class AAA final to join Spring Valley in bringing trophies home.
