HUNTINGTON -- Spring Valley ran over Huntington High with a big Riggs.
Harrison Riggs led Spring Valley with 27 points. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound junior made 13 of 14 shots, grabbed four rebounds, blocked a shot and made one steal Thursday night for Spring Valley (8-0) in a 76-55 victory in boys high school basketball in the Lucas-Archer Gym.Â
Timberwolves coach Rick Chaffin said Riggs reminds him of the player's dad, Jamie, an assistant coach at Spring Valley and former Ceredo-Kenova standout.
"It's the same way," Chaffin said. "Jamie played for me and he was short, then all the sudden he was our tallest guy. Harrison's going to be the same way. Good player and is going to be an even better player next year, I'm sure."
Spring Valley scored 24 points in the third quarter and 25 in the fourth to pull away and drop the Highlanders to 0-7.
"It was a good game," Chaffin said. "Huntington High's a good team. They just haven't started to gel yet. (Coach) Lambros (Svingos) and (assistant) J.J. (Martin) will get them going here soon. It was a good, hard game. Both teams played hard. I'm glad we came out on top."
The contest was close most of the way. Spring Valley led 27-24 at halftime and 51-43 after three quarters. The Timberwolves, though, outscored Huntington High 25-12 in the final eight minutes.
The Timberwolves used a 7-1 run to begin the fourth quarter, with Keyon Grayson making a 3-pointer and Jalyn Abercrombie and Colten Caldwell each sinking a 2-pointer. Spring Valley later used a 9-0 run to take its largest lead at 74-50 with 2:21 remaining.
The Timberwolves start five guards and rely on ball movement and quick outlet passes to produce points.
"They all pass the ball well," Chaffin said. "They all shoot the ball well. They've played in big games, and we expect that."
Clay Robertson scored 20 for Spring Valley. Grayson chipped in 11.Â
Pierson Dejneka paced the Highlanders with 13 points. Avonte Crawford scored 12 and Taviun Chandler 10.
The Timberwolves entertain Ironton at 7 p.m. Saturday. Huntington High visits Capital at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
