HUNTINGTON -- When a team benefits from its own missed free throws, it's that squad's night.
Huntington High (10-12) did just that Friday in a 60-58 victory over Hurricane in a boys Class AAAA Region 4 boys basketball tournament co-semifinal at Lucas-Archer Gym.
Twice in the final 41 seconds, Taviun Chandler grabbed teammates' missed foul shots, allowing the Highlanders to take time off the clock and keep the ball away from the Redskins (10-13).
"His ability to get up in the sky, man, he's one of the best in the state," Huntington High coach Lambros Svingos said of Chandler, a 6-foot-4 senior. "When he wants that ball, he can go get it. Those were definitely huge rebounds for us."
The game was tied 51-51 before Tristan Hornbuckle's 3-pointer from the right corner gave Huntington High a lead it never relinquished. Chandler made a pair of free throws to put the Highlanders up 59-54 with 39 seconds left.
Carson O'Dell, who scored a game-high 24 points, made two foul shots to draw Hurricane within 59-56. Jamari Tubbs swished one free throw for the Highlanders before Jojo Greene made a shot to set the score.
The Redskins had the ball with 9 seconds left but only were able to get a halfcourt, off-balance errant shot from O'Dell as time expired.
"We practiced closing out with our hands up and trying to force him to the left," Svingos said of O'Dell. "We did a great job containing him. The kid's capable of dropping 35 or 40 points."
Hurricane started quickly, using a 10-0 run for a 10-2 lead. Huntington High cut the deficit to 13-11 by the end of the first quarter and trailed 25-23 at halftime. The Redskins led 42-37 by the end of the third period, but Huntington tied it 48-48 on Chandler's basket off an offensive rebound, setting up Hornbuckle's winning shot.
Hurricane coach Lance Sutherland said he was proud of his team's effort against a team it lost to by 12 on Jan. 30.
"Our guys played their butts off," Sutherland said. "I'm not happy we lost, but I'm happy with the way they played."
Chandler paced Huntington High with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Tubbs and Isaiah Lapsley each netted 10 points.
Sean Legros scored 11 points and Greene added 10 for the Redskins.
The victory sends Huntington High into the region co-final at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parkersburg South (14-8), which topped Capital 71-64 Friday. The Patriots defeated the Highlanders 65-41 Feb. 13 in Parkersburg.
"In my opinion, that's one of the harder places to play in the state," Svingos said of South. "Not just because of the little bit of drive we have, but their crowd is loud, and they have a great student section. We're ready for the challenge."
