HUNTINGTON - J.J. Martin is following a tough act, but is thrilled for the opportunity to do so.
Martin was hired as the new head boys basketball coach at Cabell Midland High School on Tuesday, replacing Rick Chaffin, who retired to spend more time with family. Martin was an assistant to Chaffin the last two seasons when the Knights went 27-21, including 19-8 last season when they won the Class AAA, Region IV championship and advanced to the state tournament. Cabell Midland upset defending state champion George Washington 64-62 in overtime in the first round before losing to eventual champion University 71-52 in the semifinals.
Ty Sturm brings an impressive basketball lineage to Marshall University.
The Cabell Midland High School standout is a relative of former Thundering Herd guard Andy Paul Williamson, who played for Marshall from 1987 through 1990. Both are from Harts, West Virginia, long a basketball hotbed before consolidation closed Harts High School. Sturm transferred to Cabell Midland and thrived, earning a preferred walk-on offer from Thundering Herd coach Danny D'Antoni.
