CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to Sheri Kinder Tadlock who retired on June 6 after teaching music classes for 36 years at Wayne Elementary School. In those years, more than 4,000 students learned to love and to perform music as well as being involved in the community through service projects and performances. Several of TadlockƵs groups have performed in Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry, the Huntington Symphony, Ƶ Arts Alive, and numerous community nursing homes and organizations. Tadlock, a 1982 graduate of Barboursville High School and a 1986 grad of Marshall University, says that she hopes that she has shown her students how to make the world a brighter place through the gift of music. During retirement, Sheri plans to stay involved in the music community by performing with different groups, to travel, and to spend more time with her family.
PARTY: Over 100 friends and family attended the 30th anniversary of Rod AdkinsƵ Mantown parties Saturday evening, June 7, at RodƵs home in Barboursville. Rod says that it was one of the best since it also celebrated his 79th birthday. Entertainment was provided by Conner Dale and Rachel Messer and the food was furnished by Paul Wood with WooƵsQue Catering. The party was hosted by RodƵs children, Dwight and Derek Adkins and Jill Roberts.
RETIRED: Ed Harkless has ended his 46-year career as a music educator. He began his career in Ohio where he taught music in grades 1-12 before coming to Cabell County to teach at Barboursville Junior High School, Barboursville High School, and Cabell Midland High School. Ed was recently recognized as WSAZ TVƵs Hometown Hero in honor of his dedication to his profession and his students. The final concert that Ed directed was on May 9 when he was surprised by the presentation of a proclamation by Barboursville Mayor Chris Tatum who declared May 9 as ƵEd Harkless DayƵ in Barboursville. At a reception given by his colleagues, he was presented a message of congratulations from U.S. Rep. Carol Miller and Randall Reid-Smith and also messages of congratulations from U.S. Sens. Shelly Moore Capito and Jim Justice. EdƵs contributions to church music were recognized at a reception in his honor in March at First Presbyterian Church of Huntington where he served for more than 20 years.MOVING ON: The Rev. Cinda Harkless, pastor of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church of Barboursville, will retire from active service June 30. She began her service in the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in 1986. Cinda is an alumna of the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, and was ordained as Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church USA in 2004. She has served Huntington First Presbyterian, Beverly Hills Presbyterian, and Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian churches and also served as a staff member of the Presbytery of West Virginia. CindaƵs last Sunday at Kuhn Memorial is June 29. A reception will follow the worship service in celebration of her ministry. Cinda is married to Ed Harkless. They are the parents of three adult daughters and four grandchildren who live in North Carolina, where they hope to be frequent visitors.
MEETING: The Westmoreland Neighborhood Ƶsociation, Central City Organization and West Huntington Organization are co-sponsoring a meeting on Monday, June 16, at the Westmoreland WomanƵs Club, 2962 Bradley Road, Huntington, behind the former Camden Road United Bank. The guest speaker will be Brandon Butcher, meteorologist with WSAZ TV News Channel 3. He will discuss the predicted high temperatures for the 2025 summer season that officially starts June 20 and the process for gathering weather information and the models used.
