MORGANTOWN òòò½ÊÓƵ” Darian DeVries is returning to the Midwest. And West Virginia is again in the market for a menòòò½ÊÓƵ™s basketball coach.
After one season leading the Mountaineers, DeVries has taken the same job at Indiana, the Hoosiers announced on Tuesday evening.
Under DeVries, 49, West Virginia went 19-13, with a 10-10 mark in Big 12 play. West Virginia was the first team left out of the NCAA tournament on Selection Sunday.
If DeVriesòòò½ÊÓƵ™ replacement is hired before the end of March, the new coach will be òòò½ÊÓƵUòòò½ÊÓƵ™s fourth in a span of 22 months.
Bob Huggins departed that role in June 2023 after a drunk-driving arrest. Josh Eilert filled in as the interim coach in the 2023-24 season, during which the Mountaineers went 9-23.
òòò½ÊÓƵU athletic director Wren Baker said he had had òòò½ÊÓƵœseveral conversations in recent weeksòòò½ÊÓƵ with DeVries about how to grow the Mountaineersòòò½ÊÓƵ™ program.

The Hoosiers fired Mike Woodson after a 19-13 (10-10 Big Ten) season and a 82-53 record (41-39 Big Ten) over his four-year tenure. Like West Virginia, Indiana narrowly missed out on the NCAA tournament, finishing as one of the first four teams left out.
After starting his coaching career as a graduate manager at Creighton from 1998 to 2001, DeVries served as an assistant coach for the Bluejays from 2001 to 2018. He then returned to his home state to take over as the coach at Drake, where he quickly established himself as one of the top mid-major coaches in the country.
At Drake, DeVries led the Bulldogs to six consecutive 20-win seasons and three NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021, 2023, and 2024.
Hours before Indianaòòò½ÊÓƵ™s announcement, ESPN reported DeVries was not a candidate for the Iowa coaching job. A native of Aplington, Iowa, DeVries played college basketball at Northern Iowa.
Baker said òòò½ÊÓƵUòòò½ÊÓƵ™s Board of Governors and university and athletic leadership remain aligned in building the program.
