The United Football League got its season underway this weekend with five former West Virginia University players on the rosters of some of the leagueòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s eight teams, as well as a Mountaineer alumnus serving as a coach.
Veteran linebacker/defensive lineman Will Clarke will be back with the Arlington Renegades after a 2024 season in which he recorded 24 tackles, two sacks and two TFLs. He also recorded a pass breakup and a fumble recovery. Clarke also played for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL, which merged with the USFL to form the current iteration of the spring-season UFL. He counts time with Tampa Bay, Cincinnati, Detroit and New Orleans of the NFL on his resume.
The Michigan Panthers have two former Mountaineers on the roster òòò½ÊÓÆµ” safety Sean Mahone and wide receiver Marcus Simms. Mahone is a three-year Panther veteran, recording 60 tackles and an appearance in last yearòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s UFL title game.
Simms has been a receiver and kickoff returner for Michigan over the past three seasons. He had 23 catches for 426 yards in 2024, earning a spot on the all-UFL team, and had 243 return yards in 2023. He has also had short stints on the rosters of Jacksonville and Seattle, but did not appear in any games.
Wide receiver Gary Jennings will be playing for his second spring league team. He was a member of the Birmingham Stallions in 2024, catching six balls for 98 yards, including four for 78 and a score in the teamòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s championship game win. This year he will be on the Battlehawks for the second time, following a 2023 run that included 11 catches for 149 yards and three touchdowns. He has been on mostly practice and reserve squads of eight NFL teams since.
Safety Kenny Robinson will play in his second season with the Birmingham Stallions, the defending champions of the league. He had 34 tackles, two TFLs and an interception in 2024. He has also had stints with the NFLòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Former òòò½ÊÓÆµU tight end Anthony Becht returns for his third season as the coach of the Battlehawks. He is 15-6 in the league with a playoff appearance in 2024. St. Louis downed Houston 31-6 in the UFL opener on Friday night.
