Marshall fans in the student section cheer during a football game against Appalachian State on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington.
MarshallƵs 2025 football schedule was finalized on Friday, along with the rest of the Sun Belt Conference, announced by the conference.
The Thundering Herd has six home games and will play against Old Dominion, Texas State, James Madison and Georgia Southern in home SBC matchups. The annual Ƶ75Ƶ game is scheduled for Nov. 8 at Joan C. Edwards Stadium against the Dukes. Homecoming will be on Oct. 11 against the Monarchs.
ƵWe are excited to have our schedule for the 2025 season so fans can make plans to support the Herd,Ƶ Marshall coach Tony Gibson said in a release. ƵMarshall has always been one of the toughest places to play in college football and I look forward to leading our team out onto the field this fall. We need every fan to step up, get tickets and fill ƵThe JoanƵ as we get this thing going.Ƶ
The Herd opens the season in Athens, Georgia, with a matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs on Aug. 30. It will be the second time the two teams have played, as Georgia won a matchup over the Herd in 2004, 13-3.
From there, the Herd will head back to Huntington for its opener on Sept. 6 against Missouri State. It will serve as the ƵWe Are Ƶ MarshallƵ game on the promotional schedule, a game in which fans are asked to wear green. ItƵs the first matchup between the two teams as Missouri State will play its first season as a member of Conference USA.
The Herd then gets a former regional rival in Eastern Kentucky on Sept. 13. The game will be a whiteout in the ƵWe Are Ƶ Thankful For HeroesƵ promotion honoring service personnel. Marshall leads the all-time series 12-8-1 and last met the Colonels in a 59-0 win in 2020. Marshall played against Eastern Kentucky in the Ohio Valley Conference in the 1940s.
Marshall travels from there to Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 20 to face another former conference rival. The Blue Raiders are still members of Conference USA.
The Herd last played Middle Tennessee in 2021, losing 34-28. New Marshall defensive back Marvae Myers played in that game for the Blue Raiders in his first college appearance.
The series is close. Marshall leads it 6-5.
The HerdƵs Sun Belt Conference slate begins on the road on Sept. 27 at Louisiana in a rematch of the 2024 SBC championship game won by Marshall in December, 31-3. The RaginƵ Cajuns lead the series 2-1.
After a bye, the Herd will then host its homecoming game on Oct. 11 against Old Dominion and will have fans stripe the stadium. It stays at home for the next week in a first-ever matchup against Texas State Ƶ which will also play its first-ever game in West Virginia.
The Texas State game will be the ƵWe Are Ƶ Herd StrongƵ promotion for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Pink rally towels will be handed out.
Marshall then gets a second bye week before it anticipates a nationally televised Thursday night road game against Coastal Carolina on Oct. 30. The Herd trails the all-time series 2-1 against the Chanticleers, but it won last season, 31-19.
James Madison will serve as the opponent for MarshallƵs annual Ƶ75Ƶ game on Nov. 8 before the Herd hits the road on Nov. 15 at Georgia State.
The Ƶ75Ƶ game is the closest home date to the anniversary of the Nov. 14, 1970 plane crash of Southern Airways Flight 932, which killed all 75 people aboard. Fans will be asked to wear black.
Marshall travels to Appalachian State on Nov. 22 before its final home game will serve as senior night on Nov. 29 against Georgia Southern. The Eagles narrowly beat Marshall last season, 24-23. Marshall leads the series 6-3, dating back to 1989.
Times and TV considerations will be released later in the spring by both the conference and ESPN.
