HUNTINGTON Ƶ Midway through MarshallƵs baseball matchup with James Madison on Saturday, a whole slew of black and yellow poured into Jack Cook Field.
After a win over Wayne, Scott High SchoolƵs baseball team showed up in full force to watch one of its former stars on the mound for the Thundering Herd.
Griffin Miller drew the start for Marshall and threw 7 1/3 innings. He allowed just two hits and two earned runs.
Marshall lost to the Dukes, 5-4, but Miller spent time taking photos and signing autographs after the game.
ƵAlways good when they get to come out,Ƶ Miller said. ƵThey played a game 20 minutes from here, and I guess came over after that. It was good to see them.Ƶ
Miller, a sophomore, has shown strides of improvement this season as heƵs got a 2.62 ERA in six starts. He has a 3-1 record with one complete game, allowing less than a hit per inning. He leads the Herd with 21 strikeouts and has the best ERA among pitchers with 20 or more innings of work.
The game against James Madison was one of his best. He also had a season-high of six strikeouts against Fairleigh Dickinson.
ƵThe biggest thing that IƵve changed from last year is focusing on a one-pitch-at-a-time mentality,Ƶ Miller said, Ƶexecuting every pitch and not looking too far ahead in the future. If you do that, things tend to go your way.Ƶ
Marshall coach Greg Beals said MillerƵs maturity has become his greatest strength.
ƵI think the thing with Griffin is that heƵs learned his identity,Ƶ Beals said. ƵHe knows what heƵs good at, and heƵs executing it. Young players Ƶ their maturation is learning who they are and what makes them successful. They stick to that and donƵt try to do something more than another thing. Griffin is learning that.Ƶ
Miller is one of four West Virginia natives on the Herd roster, joined by Branson McCloud (Spring Valley), Kenyon Collins (Cabell Midland) and Joel Gardner (Hurricane).
Miller was a first-team all-state pitcher as a senior in high school with an ERA under 2.00.
ƵWe want to recruit in our backyard,Ƶ Beals said. ƵThe players in West Virginia Ƶ we want to have those guys and keep the top-level and elite players in the state home to play for the Herd.Ƶ
Marshall (12-13) stays on the road following a loss to ƵU on Tuesday for a Sun Belt series at No. 20 Troy.
Miller said there is room for improvement but that he is hopeful.
ƵPretty good, man,Ƶ Miller said of the year thus far. ƵWe havenƵt fully got it going yet, but itƵs coming. I know we will.Ƶ
Ƶ for how heƵs enjoying his time with the Herd?
ƵAwesome,Ƶ Miller said. ƵThe best decision I ever made was coming to Marshall. I canƵt complain one bit.Ƶ
