Dan Straily leaves Major League Baseball with a winning record and having earned more than $11 million.
The former Marshall University pitcher announced Saturday heƵs retiring. Straily, 36, does so with a 44-40 record and 4.56 earned run average in 156 games through eight seasons. Straily made 140 starts and threw 803 1.3 innings. He struck out 681 and walked 312.
Straily, 36, transferred to Marshall from Western Oregon in 2008 and played two seasons before the Oakland Athletics selected him in the 24th round of the 2009 draft.
ƵI spent my 19- and 20-year-old years there,Ƶ Straily said of Marshall. ƵThose were formative years. It helped me grow up.Ƶ
Straily made his big league debut Aug. 3, 2012, starting for the AƵs in a 5-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Straily allowed one run on five hits, struck out five and walked one but garnered no decision.
Straily went 12-9 in two seasons with Oakland, including a start against Detroit in the 2013 playoffs. Straily didnƵt receive a decision in that game.
On July 5, 2014, Oakland traded Straily, Billy McKinney and Addison Russell to the Chicago Cubs for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammell. Straily went 0-1 with the Cubs before being dealt with Luis Valbuena to Houston for Dexter Fowler in the offseason.
With the Ƶtros, Straily was 0-1 before being sent to San Diego for Erik Kratz. Straily never appeared in a game for the Padres before being selected off waivers by Cincinnati, where he recorded his best season, going 14-8 with a 3.76 ERA in 2016 for a team that went 68-94.
In the offseason, the Reds traded Straily to Miami for Luis Castillo, Austin Brice and Zeek White. In two seasons with the Marlins, Straily went 15-15 before finishing his MLB career with Baltimore, going 2-4 in 2019.
Straily signed with Lotte of the Korean Baseball Organization and was one of the premier hurlers in the league, going 32-23 in four seasons. Straily signed minor league contracts with Arizona and the Cubs before finishing his career with eight games this season in the Mexican League.
