Marshall University is the desired destination for many Tri-State athletes, particularly those who grew up rooting for the Thundering Herd and attending MU games.
Following is a look at six who played baseball or softball for Marshall this past school year:
HALEIGH ADKINS, Lincoln County, softball.
A transfer from Miami (Ohio), Adkins earned second-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. The middle infielder smacked 14 home runs, drove in 34 runs and hit .293. Adkins slugged .707 and posted a .385 on-base percentage. Her fielding percentage was .925.
BRYCE BLEVINS, Lawrence County, baseball.
The junior left-hander went 6-6 with a 6.46 earned run average. In 16 games, all starts, and 92 innings, Blevins allowed 106 hits, struck out 49 and walked 26. Opponents batted .298.
KENYON COLLINS, Cabell Midland, baseball.
A redshirt freshman hurler, Collins appeared in 11 games, starting four. He went 0-1 with a 13.85 earned run average. In 13 innings, he gave up 22 hits, struck out 11 and walked 13. Foes hit .379.
JOEL GARDNER, Hurricane, baseball.
The junior first baseman began his career at West Virginia University, transferred to Cleveland State Junior College and finished at Marshall. With the Herd last season, Gardner appeared in five games, starting five. He drove in three runs and batted .211 with a .400 on-base percentage.
RAMEY GEORGE, Huntington St. Joe, softball
. A redshirt freshman, George played in 19 games, starting three. She hit two home runs, knocked in eight runs and batted .240. George slugged .500 and reached base at a .286 clip.
PEYTON JACKSON, Boyd County, baseball. A redshirt freshman right-handed pitcher, Jackson started five of the 18 games in which he played. He went 1-0 with a 3.78 ERA, allowing 21 hits in 24 innings. He fanned 20 and walked six. Opposing teams batted .231.
