Marshall University is the dream destination for many local sports stars. Following is a look at six who played for the Thundering Herd last season:
BRYCE BLEVINS, baseball, Lawrence County HS:
The sophomore left-hander turned in a spectacular season, making the All-Sun Belt Conference team. In 15 games, 11 of them starts, Blevins went 3-5 with a 3.45 earned run average. In 86 innings, Blevins allowed 85 hits, struck out 71 and walked 20. Opponents batted .260. Blevins was named the conference pitcher of the week four times.
BAILEY FISHER, womenòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s soccer, Hurricane HS. Fisher started 16 of 17 games as a sophomore and led the Herd with seven goals.
ABI HUGH, womenòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s soccer, Huntington St. Joe HS.
Hugh started all 17 games, scoring two goals and assisting on four. After the season, she transferred to North Carolina State.
REILLY LUCAS, softball, Cabell Midland HS. Lucas, a junior first baseman, started all 53 games, smashed eight home runs, knocked in 36 runs and hit .305. She smacked 13 doubles and one triple, slugged .558 and reached base at a .416 clip. She walked 30 times and struck out 33. Lucas finished with a .984 fielding percentage.
CAMRYN MICHALLAS, softball, Huntington HS.
Michallas played third base as a senior and hit five home runs, drove in 22 runs and batted .283, with a.415 slugging percentage and .328 on-base percentage. She doubled four times and tripled once, with a .912 fielding percentage. Michallas started all 53 games.
OWEN PORTER, football, Spring Valley HS. After becoming an All-Sun Belt Conference first-team selection, Porter signed with the Minnesota Vikings in April. The defensive end/linebacker made 62 tackles, 15 for losses, 29 solo stops and five sacks. Porter deflected two passes and forced two fumbles.
