SPRING VALLEY òòò½ÊÓƵ” If Will Adkins is in charge of the locker room music for Glenville State College's football team, he'll likely have the Pioneers "In the Mood" to play.
On Friday, Adkins signed a national letter of intent to play at Glenville State, choosing the Pioneers over Concord, Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia State and Urbana. In the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Spring Valley High School quarterback, Glenville is getting a strong-armed passer with a love for big band music.
"Harry James, Glenn Miller, some others," Adkins said of his favorite bands from an era in stark contrast to the rap, hip hop, country and rock most of his Timberwolves teammates prefer. "Songs, 'In the Mood, Moonlight Sonata, It's Been a Long, Long Time.' I love big band music. I get that from my great-grandparents."
Glenville State is more interested in Adkins' arm that his ears. A second-team All Tri-State selection by The Herald-Dispatch, Adkins completed 55 of 85 passes for 1,056 yards and 17 touchdowns, with one interception last season in helping Spring Valley to its third consecutive Class AAA state championship game.
"I went through several different schools and Glenville felt like the right one," Adkins said. "It had a good atmosphere, has great Christian people and good facilities."
Adkins, who said he enjoys church, family, fishing and friends, is undecided on a major. He also said his hobby is watching quarterback videos.
"I like to dissect plays," he said.
Adkins said many people have influenced him, including parents, grandparents, his pastor, youth pastor and coaches. ... and Peyton Manning. Adkins attended the NFL great's camp numerous times and learned a great deal from the former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos legend.
"I learned a lot about watching film and about work ethic," Adkins said. "One thing he told me that I remember is to have a short memory. If you make a mistake, forget it and move on to the next play."
A transfer from òòò½ÊÓƵhland, Adkins brought a passing aspect run-oriented Spring Valley lacked.
"An offense is very dangerous when you can do both," Adkins said.
