ONA Ƶ Quinn Hazelett put up a large number on Saturday morning and small statistics on Saturday afternoon.
The Cabell Midland High School girls track and field standout took her ACT before running in the Carlos Akers/Doc Hale Invitational at Chris Parsons Track.
Hazelett said she feels good about her performances in both.
HazelettƵs performance on the ACT was more or less a formality. She already owns a track scholarship to Davis & Elkins.
Hazelett helped Cabell Midland win the 4x800-meter relay Saturday in 10:13.79, more than 26 seconds ahead of runner-up Huntington High. Hazelett finished fifth in the 800-meter run, crossing the finish line in 2:25.25, fewer than five seconds behind winner Neena McClintic of Greenbrier East. Hazelett helped the Knights place third in the 4x400 relay in 4:21.66.
ƵIƵm feeling good,Ƶ Hazelett said. ƵI was a little nervous at first, but as the meet kept going on, I felt good. I went out and tried to run steady, then finish strong.Ƶ
Davis & Elkins has mined Cabell Midland for track performers for years. Sprinter/hurdler Jakeya Perrin starred for the Senators, graduating in 2021. Tristan Blatt, Cooper Gibson and Jackson Gibson run for the D&E menƵs team. Hazelett said those runners influenced her college decision.
ƵSome people who used to go to Midland went there,Ƶ Hazelett said. ƵI really love the coach (Jason Pyles). HeƵs a good guy. He really pushed me to go there. ItƵs a great school, a great campus. I love it there.Ƶ
Pyles ran for Point Pleasant High School, from which he graduated in 2000, and Marshall University. HeƵs coached the Senators for six seasons.
Parsons, Cabell MidlandƵs coach, said Hazelett will be a strong runner for Davis & Elkins, lauding her competitive nature.
ƵShe puts the work in and IƵm sure sheƵll continue to do so in college,Ƶ he said.
Hazelett said sheƵs leaning toward majoring in biology but hasnƵt decided. She described herself as Ƶkind of boringƵ compared to some of her teammates.
ƵI like to hang out with friends,Ƶ she said. ƵThatƵs basically it. I love running. Running is pretty much everything I do.Ƶ
Hazelett said she enjoys the 800 more than any other race.
ƵI like it because itƵs not too long but itƵs not a sprint,Ƶ she said. ƵItƵs just the right distance. I just really like it.Ƶ
