ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio Ƶ A pair of Ironton football standouts get an assist for the University of Pikeville landing a star linebacker from Fairland.
Quentin Cremeans signed with UPike on March 21. He said the Fighting TigersƵ Tyler Roach and Nick Sites, also Bears signees, helped lure him to Pikeville.
ƵThey made me want to go there more,Ƶ Cremeans said.
Cremeans made 101 tackles and one interception last season to help the Dragons to a 10-2 record, the Ohio Valley Conference championship and the second round of the playoffs.
Cremeans, who measures 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, chose UPike over Defiance and Rio Grande.
Cremeans said he doesnƵt know if heƵll play inside or outside with the Bears.
ƵIƵll play wherever they need me,Ƶ Cremeans said.
Fairland coach Mike Jackson said he thinks Cremeans will thrive at Pikeville.
ƵHe does everything well,Ƶ Jackson said. ƵYou donƵt have to worry about him. HeƵs a leader on the field and in practice.Ƶ
Cremeans said heƵll major in business.
MELVIN TO SHAWNEE STATE: Rock Hill High SchoolƵs Isabell Melvin has played only one season of golf but did it well enough to land a scholarship from the Bears.
ƵI fell in love with it,Ƶ Melvin said of the game. ƵItƵs just me out there. I donƵt have to rely on anyone else.Ƶ
Melvin finished seventh in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. She also plays softball and is on the bowling team.
Melvin said she plans to major in biomedical science.
WAGONER A YELLOW JACKET: Spring Valley baseball star Garrett Wagoner signed with West Virginia State on Tuesday.
Wagoner said former Timberwolf and current State pitcher Tyrus Baumgardner helped him pick the Yellow Jackets after showing him around campus.
ƵIƵd never been there before,Ƶ Wagoner said. ƵI really liked it.Ƶ
Wagoner, who said heƵll major in pre-med, is batting .312 and is 1-0 with a 2.10 earned run average this season. He said heƵll be a two-way player at State, also playing the outfield.
BOOTH SIGNS WITH UC: Spring Valley football standout Brae Booth signed with the University of Charleston on Friday.
The 6-foot, 185-pound linebacker made 44 tackles, four for losses and one sack last season to help the Timberwolves to an 8-4 record and the second round of the postseason. He forced one fumble.
CLAGG SIGNS WITH WILMINGTON: River Valley High School fullback Brendan Clagg said smaller is better.
Clagg signed with Wilmington (Ohio) College. He said he liked the small-town, small-school atmosphere and the 15:1 student/staff ratio.
