SISSONVILLE, W.Va. Ƶ Cabell Midland golfer Jack Michael has played in two events this season and has won both.
The second victory came on Thursday at Edgewood Country Club, where he shot a 2-under-par 69 to tie for the individual win in the Capital City Classic.
Win No. 1 came on Wednesday at the Duke Ridgley Invitational at Guyan Golf & Country Club in Huntington. Michael defeated Shady SpringƵs Cooper Ward by one stroke in that tournament to win.
On Thursday, Ward matched MichaelƵs score as the two finished as top medalists.
ƵIt wasnƵt my greatest but, you know, itƵs always nice to shoot in the 60s,Ƶ said Michael, who will be a senior once school starts. ƵPlayed really good on the front nine and then didnƵt have my best on the back, so itƵs just kind of a smooth, consistent round.Ƶ
Michael, a ƵU golf commit, birdied holes No. 1, 5 and 8 for a 31 through nine holes. A bogey on the 15th hole cost him par for the back nine.
ƵWeƵre so used to this result, it seems like a routine,Ƶ Cabell Midland coach Matt Stead said. ƵI know heƵs still frustrated because he thinks he should have shot 5- or 6-under, and he probably should have, but any time you start a round and tell me youƵre going to get a 2-under, weƵll take it every day of the week and twice on Sunday.Ƶ
Ward birdied the second and fifth holes, while he bogeyed the third and fourth to finish even at 34 for the front nine.
Birdies on the 12th and 13th holes helped him clinch the tie.
WardƵs Shady Spring teammate Tyler Beard shot 1-under-par 70 to finish in a three-way tie for third with George WashingtonƵs Lee Willard and WinfieldƵs Stephen McDavid.
Like Michaels, McDavid primarily noticed the opportunities he didnƵt make.
A bogey on 18 and a double-bogey on No. 1 kept him from a better round, McDavid said.
Michael, Ward, Beard, Willard and McDavid claimed awards for finishing in the top five.
The Knights finished 7-over to take second in the team standings, with Alex White finishing 10th overall at 4-over-par 75.
Hurricane shot 11-over to take third, followed by Parkersburg South, Winfield, Linsly, George Washington and Chapmanville. Elkins and Spring Valley shot 31-over to tie for ninth and round out the top 10.
The Capital City Classic consisted of 33 teams. The tournament is the first of four in the Tri-State Cup in which points are accumulated by the winners to determine the champion.
Hurricane won the 2023 Tri-State Cup, powered by the play of Savannah Hawkins, who is now a freshman at Marshall University.
ƵWe had a couple of double (bogeys) that hurt us,Ƶ said Redskins coach Sam OƵDell, who felt his team struggled with ThursdayƵs heat. Ƶ(The heat) makes it hard to make the right decisions.Ƶ
OƵDellƵs son Parker, an incoming freshman at Hurricane, led the way for the Skins after he shot even for the day at 71. That tied him for sixth place with WahamaƵs Grant Roush.
The second round of the Tri-State Cup is scheduled for Friday at Riverside Golf Club in Mason. Teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
On Tuesday, the tournament will shift to Oglebay Resort and conclude on Wednesday at Stonewall Resort.
