SOUTH POINT, Ohio Ƶ Bindi Staley might want to hang out at Alumni Stadium more often.
Staley, who walked across the stadiumƵs turf as South Point High SchoolƵs homecoming queen Friday night, scored the go-ahead goal on the same field Tuesday in the PointersƵ 2-0 victory over Fairland.
The triumph completed a 13-3 regular season and a 10-0 Ohio Valley Conference mark. The league title is the first in South Point girls soccer history.
ƵI just really canƵt believe it still,Ƶ said South Point first-year coach Summer Collins, who led Rock Hill to several OVC titles before joining the Pointers. ƵIƵm so proud that they won the OVC, but IƵm more proud theyƵre undefeated.Ƶ
Fairland (7-7, 7-3) made South Point earn the championship. The Dragons spent about as much time in the PointersƵ half of the field as South Point did in FairlandƵs. The Pointers took seven shots to the DragonsƵ six. South Point owned a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
ƵFairland played amazing tonight, too,Ƶ Collins said. ƵThey played really well.Ƶ
Not, however, as well as South Point. StaleyƵs goal at 13:46 gave the Pointers all the scoring they needed. No game, though, would be complete without a goal from Jasmyn Jones, who scored on a shot off Fairland goalkeeper Macy Auxier with 8:28 left in the first half. The goal was the 110th of JonesƵ career.
ƵSheƵs setting the bar high for generations to come,Ƶ Collins said of Jones, who is scheduled to go on a college visit to Kentucky Christian University on Thursday.
Jaidyn Malone made six saves to earn the victory.
Collins said she knew when she accepted the job the Pointers had talent, but whether they could win the league was a question.
ƵI knew that was the goal,Ƶ Collins said. ƵI knew it would be hard. I didnƵt know if I thought it would actually happen until it was here.Ƶ
Collins said the team that won Friday night persevered.
ƵWe had so many come out over the summer who didnƵt play,Ƶ Collins said. ƵThen we had some at the last second go to volleyball, which broke my heart.Ƶ
South Point drew the No. 5 seed in the 13-team Southeast District sectional tournament. The Pointers will entertain No. 12 Logan Elm (3-10) at 6 p.m. Monday in the first round.
ƵItƵs been a fun season, but itƵs not over yet,Ƶ Collins said. ƵWeƵre ready to go for a sectional championship.Ƶ
