ONA Ƶ Rylee Morris celebrated her birthday not by receiving a gift, but giving one.
The George Washington girls soccer standout, to whom players from both teams sang ƵHappy BirthdayƵ before the game, issued an assist to Deryn Doamekpor 5:57 into the game for the go-ahead goal in the PatriotsƵ 4-0 victory over Cabell Midland on Thursday.
George Washington (3-2) scored two goals in each half to drop the Knights (0-3-1). Doamekpor starred, scoring the first three goals.
ƵIt was a great game and both teams did a great job,Ƶ Patriots coach Ali Sadeghian said. ƵWe moved the ball well. Cabell did a great job. TheyƵre a young team, and hopefully theyƵre going to be good in the next year or two.Ƶ
Doamekpor scored the opening goal on a header. She added another on a breakaway at 38:58 to sent GW to the half with a 2-0 lead.
At 56:47, Doamekpor struck again on a breakaway for a 3-0 lead. With 20:12 to play, Adrienne Moyers deftly eluded Knights goalkeeper Jasmine Moore and plunked the ball into the net to set the score.
Moore, a junior, made 10 saves, some in spectacular fashion. The Patriots, though, spent the majority of the contest in Cabell Midland territory and took 15 shots. The Knights took one, a Milla Werthammer boot that GW stopped.
ƵWe think sheƵs the best in the state,Ƶ Knights coach Andy Wilson said of Moore. ƵWeƵre just so young and inexperienced. They mightƵve scored 10 if not for Jas.Ƶ
ƵTheyƵre good,Ƶ Bolling said. ƵThey have a lot of juniors and seniors, and we have a lot of freshmen and sophomores.Ƶ
Wilson said he was pleased with the KnightsƵ effort.
ƵWeƵll get there,Ƶ Wilson said. ƵWeƵre just awfully young.Ƶ
Sadghian said he was pleased with GWƵs showing.
ƵWe tried to give everybody playing time,Ƶ he said. ƵThat was a good opportunity for the younger kids to play and get some experience with the team. It was a good game to do that.Ƶ
The Knights return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday at home against Greenbrier East. The Patriots visit Riverside at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
