CHARLESTON Ƶ The White Falcons were perfectly content to be grounded on Friday.
Wahama rushed on 40 of its 46 offensive plays and picked up all four of its touchdowns on the ground in a 29-22 win over Cameron in the ƵSSAC Class A state football championship game at University of Charleston Stadium at Laidley Field.
Wahama (14-0) won its second state championship in its 91st season and tied the school record for single-season victories. Cameron (12-2) came up short in its first state title-game berth in its 115th campaign.
Connor Lambert and Trace Simpkins both rushed for more than 100 yards for the White Falcons.
Lambert, named WahamaƵs game MVP, tallied two third-quarter touchdowns as the White Falcons looked to pull away from a tie game at halftime.
Cameron, though, climbed back, making it a one-score contest with 2:32 to play when Mason Scott hauled in Kason AngelƵs pass in the end zone from 22 yards out and Klypsan Wallace ran for the two-pointer.
The Dragons tried an onside kick after that, but Wahama recovered and ran the clock out.
ƵWe needed to get one more drive together,Ƶ Cameron coach Tim Brown said. ƵMaybe if we couldƵve got one more turnover; if that onside kick, if we bounce it our way, I think we had a shot. But I just canƵt believe how hard these kids just kept playing and playing.Ƶ
Cameron perhaps best epitomized that in the first half by putting together a big-boy drive of 85 yards on 16 plays, taking a whopping 11:19 off the clock.
Kason Angel plunged into the end zone from 2 yards out to cap that possession and put the Dragons ahead 14-7 with 5:18 to go in the second quarter.
That, though, was enough time for WahamaƵs quick-strike offense Ƶ even as the White Falcons did it on the ground instead of through the air Ƶ to get level by intermission.
Wahama went 64 yards in 10 plays to score on Wyatt HarrisƵ 1-yard run.
There was even time for a moment of anxiety. The ball came out, leading to a Cameron replay challenge.
Upon review, the call stood.
ƵWe felt like we needed to score, and we were lucky enough, and I didnƵt know if he got in or not,Ƶ Wahama coach James Toth said. ƵI come over and asked him when he come off, I said, ƵDid you get in?Ƶ He said, ƵYeah, but itƵs close, coach,Ƶ and then, luckily, we got the call.Ƶ
Or, as Brown put it when asked by a reporter after the game what he saw that made him chuck the challenge flag: ƵWell, what I saw was that he fumbled the ball before he got across the line. But thatƵs not what the replay said, so there you go.Ƶ
Harris then booted the extra point to tie the game at halftime. And Wahama got the ball first out of the locker room and took the lead to stay on LambertƵs 1-yard scoring jaunt.
Lambert followed it with a two-point conversion run, just getting inside the left pylon.
ƵI felt like, third quarter, we really took it to them,Ƶ Toth said. ƵWe talked about winning the line of scrimmage at halftime. IƵm not sure we did that the first half, but I think we did the second half.Ƶ
Wahama outrushed Cameron 267 yards to 184. Simpkins ran 16 times for 125 yards and the White FalconsƵ first touchdown. Lambert pitched in 114 yards on 18 totes.
Meanwhile, the Dragons outpassed the White Falcons 114 yards to 39.
Angel was named CameronƵs game MVP after amassing that passing total. He threw for two scores and ran for 64 yards, a TD and a two-pointer. He also made an interception defensively.
Wallace ran for 100 yards on 22 carries. Scott had two receptions for 55 yards and a score. Wes Starcher caught a touchdown pass as well for Cameron.
Wahama came up with just enough stops to hold off the Dragons.
ƵItƵs a game of momentum and you gotta stop the tide,Ƶ Toth said. Ƶ(CameronƵs) kids run hard; their kids do things necessary to be successful. I felt like that once we got them stopped that we kinda got some edge to us and we got some ƵupƵ to us, and at the end of the day, itƵs gonna be ebb and flow.
ƵCameronƵs a really good football team, guys, and weƵre lucky ... no, IƵm gonna say weƵre thankful, to be a state champion.Ƶ
