SPRING VALLEY Ƶ Avonte Crawford walked past Billy Seals and made it about 15 yards before the Huntington High School football coach yelled his assessment of the quarterbackƵs play Friday night.
ƵCrawford didnƵt do anything,Ƶ Seals said while being interviewed after the HighlandersƵ 40-21 victory over host Spring Valley (3-3).
Crawford turned and smiled. Seals chuckled. They both knew Seals was kidding.
Crawford completed 17 of 21 passes for 249 yards and one touchdown, with one interception.
He also turned a fumble recovery into a 30-yard return for a touchdown and ran an interception back 98 yards for a touchdown. He ran five times for 10 yards
Crawford adeptly picked up Timberwolves blitz and threw the ball to the receiver running a shorter pattern. He was successful going long, as well, with a TD pass of 28 yards and completions of 46 and 34 yards. Four other passes went for double-digit yardage.
ƵAny time you have a kid who is a two-year starter and has played as well as Avonte has, you have a lot of confidence in him making the right reads,Ƶ Seals said. ƵWe put a lot on Avonte and he did some great things.Ƶ
Some of those things were on defense from his safety position.
ƵHe started at safety as a sophomore when Gavin Lochow was our quarterback,Ƶ Seals said. ƵWe kind of like to play our quarterbacks of the future at safety because we think it gives them a better understanding of the pass coverages and where guys are going to be. You can see that with Gavin, who played a little bit of safety, Avonte, Clark Wilson, there have been a lot of guys whoƵve done that for us.Ƶ
Spring Valley coach Brad Dingess said he was impressed with Crawford.
ƵHe did a great job,Ƶ Dingess said. ƵHe threw the ball well, for a high percentage. They have athletes. ItƵs tough to guard all of them.Ƶ
Both teams return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Huntington High (5-1) entertains South Charleston (0-6). The Timberwolves visit Capital (2-4).
