For the second consecutive week, Spring Valley was second in the òòò½ÊÓÆµsociated Press West Virginia Class AAAA girls high school basketball poll.
The Timberwolves (12-2, 74 points) were No. 1 in Class AAAA on two ballots. Top-ranked Morgantown (11-2, 78) was atop six votersòòò½ÊÓÆµ™ submissions. University (9-5, 56), Parkersburg (12-3, 51) and Wheeling Park (11-6, 42) followed in the top five Tuesday.
Hurricane (13-2, 36) slipped one notch to sixth, ahead of St. Albans (9-3, 34), Washington (9-2, 28), Musselman (10-4, 15) and George Washington (9-6, 13).
Parkersburg South, Martinsburg, Cabell Midland and John Marshall garnered votes.
Wayne (11-4, 55) held at No. 4 in Class AAA behind Greenbrier East (16-0, 78), Nitro (10-3, 68) and Grafton (13-0, 67). The Spartans accumulated six No. 1 votes. The Wildcats and Bearcats picked up one each.
East Fairmont (13-4, 49) was fifth, followed by Sissonville (12-2, 42), Keyser (12-3, 29), Lewis County (7-6, 20), Elkins (8-5, 13) and Hampshire (8-6, 10). Princeton and PikeView received votes.
Wahama (9-3, 13) climbed into the top 10 in Class A at No. 9 ahead of River View (8-7, 12). Gilmer County (13-2, 80) was a consensus No. 1, followed by Tucker County (10-2, 72), Tug Valley (16-2, 64), Cameron (8-3, 55) and Tygarts Valley (9-4, 49) in the top five.
Pendleton County (8-4, 34) is sixth, Greenbrier West (5-4) seventh and Pocahontas County (8-4, 25) eighth. Clarksburg Notre Dame and Webster County appeared on ballots.
St. Marys (13-2, 70) received only one first-place vote but topped Class AA with 70 points. Previous No. 1 Wheeling Central (13-2, 68) picked up six No. 1 nods to rank second. Williamstown (12-4, 65), James Monroe (13-1, 60) and Charleston Catholic (10-3, 44) make up the rest of the top five. The Mavericks earned one top vote.
Wyoming East (9-4, 41), Logan (10-5, 30), Ritchie County (10-4, 25), Summers County (9-5, 13) and Doddridge County (10-4, 12) fill out the top 10. Buffalo, Roane County and Ravenswood picked up votes.
Boys polls
On the boys side, Spring Valley is fifth, Huntington St. Joe sixth and Wayne seventh in their respective classes.
The Timberwolves (12-1, 55) slipped one spot in Class AAAA after Saturdayòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s loss to Huntington High, which received votes in the poll. Morgantown (11-1, 86) received five No. 1 votes to take over the top spot from Spring Mills after beating the Cardinals last week. Spring Mills (13-1, 81) picked up two top nods to rank second. George Washington (13-0, 76) was top-ranked on two ballots and held firm at No. 3.
Martinsburg (8-3, 60) and Spring Valley round out the top five ahead of South Charleston (9-3, 40), University (11-2, 33), Woodrow Wilson (9-3, 30), Washington (9-3, 19) and Parkersburg South (7-5, 11). Hedgesville also received votes.
Huntington St. Joe (7-6, 42) remained sixth in Class A behind unanimous No. 1 Tug Valley (12-2, 90), Tucker County (13-2, 81), Greater Beckley Christian (9-5, 65), East Hardy (9-5, 61) and Tygarts Valley (9-2, 54). Tug Valley knocked off previous No. 1 Tucker County last week.
Clay-Battelle (8-4, 40), Man (11-3, 23), Wahama (8-4, 23) and Sherman (9-5, eight) finished out the top 10. Pendleton County and Magnolia appeared on ballots.
Wayne (9-3, 36) moved up one spot to seventh in Class AAA, ahead of Chapmanville (7-5, 29), Greenbrier East (7-6, 13) and Robert C. Byrd (7-3, eight). Shady Spring (9-1, 88) earned eight of nine top votes to out-distance Bridgeport (11-1, 81), which garnered the other first-place vote.
Nitro (9-3, 74) was third, followed by Herbert Hoover (10-1, 63), Fairmont Senior (8-2, 54) and Ripley (10-3, 40).
Williamstownòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s triumph over then-top-ranked Wheeling Central vaulted the Yellowjackets (11-3, 90) from No. 3 to No. 1 on all Class AA ballots. The Maroon Knights (12-2, 81) slipped to second. Logan (11-3, 67) rose from fourth to third. Wyoming East (8-2, 64) fell from second to fourth. James Monroe (11-2, 47) climbed from eighth to fifth.
Charleston Catholic (7-7, 46), Ravenswood (10-3, 40), Doddridge County (11-2, 28), Braxton County (8-3, 22) and Westside (6-4, nine) round out the top 10. Ritchie County received one vote.
