The region has produced several college golfers, a growing number in recent years. Following is a look at six who played this past school year:
MOLLY FITZWATER, Gallia Academy, Rio Grande.
The senior was Rio Grandeòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s highest finisher in the River States Conference tournament at the Glade Springs Resort in Daniels, West Virginia. She shot 61-over-par 277 to place 24th. Fitzwater finished 12th in the Shawnee State Invitational, carding a 25-over 97. Her 28-over 172 was good for ninth at the Alice Lloyd Fall Invite.
SAVANNAH HAWKINS, Hurricane HS, Marshall.
Hawkins competed in all 10 events for the Thundering Herd as a true freshman, finishing in the top 25 three times. Hawkins boasted a 78.0 stroke average in 30 rounds. Her best finish was at the RiverTowne Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina, when she finished 10th. She finished 17th at the Butler Fall Invitational, shooting an even-par 72, followed by a 70. Hawkins placed 22nd at the Tot Hill Invitational in òòò½ÊÓÆµheboro, North Carolina.
CONNOR INGELS, Wahama HS, Rio Grande
. The sophomore finished 32nd with a 31-over par 247 in the Northwestern (Ohio) Invitational. His 43-over 256 was good for 72nd at the Keiser Cup in West Palm Beach, Florida. Ingels placed 49th in the Heritage Hill Intercollegiate in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, shooting 36-over 252. In the River States Conference championships, Ingels was 35th with a 28-over 244.
TAYLOR SERGENT, Cabell Midland HS, Marshall.
A sophomore, Sergent played in three events, with five rounds in the 70s. Her best finish came at the RiverTowne Invitational, in which she tied for 41st. Sergentòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s best round was in the MountainView Collegiate in Tucson, Arizona, when she shot an opening-round 75.
SAMMY SHY, Spring Valley HS, Marshall.
Shy competed in five rounds as a freshman with a stroke average of 74.8. In his first college tournament, Shy fired even-par 71 in the opening round at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and carded a 73 in the second round. Shy tied for 40th at The Indy at Forest Hills in Richmond, Indiana.
CLAYTON THOMAS, Fairland HS, Marshall. Thomas carded one of the lowest rounds in program history in the first round of the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational when he shot 9-under-par 62 on his way to a third-place finish. In 13 rounds, Thomas finished with four rounds at even par or better and finished with a 73.4 stroke average, third-best on the Herd.
