MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Ƶ News) Ƶ FootballƵs Zach Frazier, out of Fairmont Senior High School, and cross country and track and field athlete Ceili McCabe have been nominated as West VirginiaƵs candidates for the 2021-22 Big 12 Athletes of the Year Awards.

A male and female athlete from each of the conferenceƵs 10 schools has been nominated with the winners to be announced next week.

Frazier had an outstanding sophomore year for the Mountaineers and was named a permanent team captain going into the season and lived up to the honor.

Frazier earned second team All-American honors from both the AFCA and Walter Camp while also being named to the All-Big 12 Academic eam.

He started all 13 games and allowed only three sacks during the year, going 10 games without missing a sack or missing an assignment.

McCabe, a redshirt freshman from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada was named both the Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Runner of the Year after going through an undefeated regular season in cross county.

She also landed three different All-American honors during tye year in cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field.

McCabe holds the naitonal sophomore record and sixth fastest time in NCAA history in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in the time of 9:31.10. She was named Big 12 Runner of the Week twice and was named National Ahtlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA once.

She also claimed the first Big 12 Cross Country championship by a West Virginia runner.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. Ƶ The numbers, they can be misleading.

In the case of Leddie Brown and the NFL combine, timings and measurables didnƵt reflect the career he had at West Virginia, where he rushed for 2,888 yards and 27 touchdowns on 620 carries over four seasons.

Averaging 4.7 yards per carry, he was a productive runner, and also added 604 receiving yards and five scores on 86 receptions. Rushing behind a suspect offensive line, he was the focal point of the Mountaineer offense over his last two seasons.

However, skipping West VirginiaƵs bowl game as a senior to help prepare for the combine at Lucas Oil Stadium didnƵt accomplish much, at least in terms of moving him up the ladder of performances at the NFLƵs big show in Indianapolis.

He recorded a 40-yard dash time of 4.64 seconds, which was 26th out of 27 backs participating in that drill. His vertical jump of an even 30 inches placed him 29th out of 31 participants, with his broad jump of 9 feet, 10 inches putting him 23rd out of 30.

Brown did not participate in the bench press, as only six of the backs on scene did so.

Brown is currently being evaluated as a potential late round pick, and could fall to free agent status.

NFL analyst Lance Zierlein noted Brown is Ƶmissing the creativity to become a problem for run defenses as a pro. Will hit the hole with good decisiveness and forward lean but doesnƵt have the vision to alter pathways when needed and make the most out of run lanes. HeƵs tough and proven as a volume runner with pass-catching ability, but heƵs neither explosive or dynamic as a runner and is a likely late-round option who will rely on his no-nonsense approach to compete for a back-end roster spot.Ƶ

The 2022 NFL Draft runs from April 28-30 in Las Vegas, Nevada, at Allegiant Stadium, the home venue of the Las Vegas Raiders.
