I learned on Jan. 25 that President Trump has withdrawn federal security protection for some 50 former cabinet secretaries, advisors and others, among them Mike Pompeo, John Bolton and Dr. Anthony Fauci. All are targets of foreign (Iran especially) and domestic (right-wing militias) death threats. Most worked in the first Trump presidency, but they had the audacity to criticize the dear leader. (Note that President Biden kept those security details active during his presidency.) Any harm on our former public servants is on the head of the new president. In the same week, Trump pardoned the convicted thugs who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, some seeking revenge. Our new president is a vindictive and self-centered man with a fragile ego. A spoiled five-year old in adult clothing with a red tie.

In just over a week, a trend toward authoritarianism. Firing federal workers engaged in DEI, removing immigration court officials, and worse, some 17 inspector generals responsible for keeping our government accountable. To add, making federal aid in natural disasters conditional on personal loyalty, unlawful raids on communities across the country to arrest migrants, potentially using our U.S. military against citizens. On the foreign front, withdrawing from international treaties and commitments, insulting our allies and friends, halting U.S. aid abroad. More horrors to follow.
