The excess levy on the Cabell County primary election ballot has led to great strife in our usually tight-knit community. Our parks and libraries serve an essential role in the daily lives of so many of our neighbors that remain unseen to many.
Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District programs and facilities allow children who might not be ready for organized sports in school access to outdoor reaction opportunities not available through traditional school-based athletic programs. However, it is not uncommon to see coaches from school-based athletic programs using the parks for practice and other related events. The ways our parks potentially benefit all county residentsƵ physical education and health are far too great to include in a short column.
In the first 24 years of this century, the rush to digitize every aspect of our lives has been unstoppable. From filing taxes to applying to social services, digital communication is preferred or required by most entities we interact with daily. The Cabell County Public Library allows our neighbors without internet access to interact with the world in a way many of us take for granted. This need will become more evident as Congress did not extend federal subsidies for home internet access in the federal budget.
These are two of the many irreplaceable benefits of our parks and library systems in Cabell County. The Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia may have ruled that the board of education is not obligated to fund these systems through the excess levy, but the voters of Cabell County have not yet weighed in. I urge you to vote ƵnoƵ on the Board of Education excess levy on May 14. ItƵs time for the voters of Cabell County to issue their ruling and force the board of education to agree to a more equitable distribution of levy funds on the November ballot.
