CHARLESTON Ƶ A West Virginia State University linebacker was shot and killed in Charleston Wednesday night.
According to statements from the university and police, Jyilek Zyiare Harrington, 21, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the Patriot at Greenbrier apartment complex.
The Charleston Fire Department attempted lifesaving measures but Harrington was later pronounced dead, police said.
Police said a disturbance happened in the hallway and inside an apartment resulting in gunshots. The universityƵs statement said the shooting was being investigated as a home invasion.
Harrington was a senior inside linebacker. The university called him a Ƶleader not only on our campus, but in our community.Ƶ
Online rosters show that Harrington, originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, also played football at Carson-Newman University and Erskine College.
A scheduled Thursday evening game against Carson-Newman was postponed to noon Friday. The teams were to hold a private vigil Thursday night.
During Christmastime, Harrington would create a GoFundMe to support less-fortunate children and families, according to the university. The ƵSU Athletic Department has established a fund in honor of Harrington that will be distributed to an organization in Charlotte. You can donate at .

WednesdayƵs shooting was the sixth reported homicide in Charleston this year.
