Homemade signs
Attendees shared their priorities with signs such as ƵNo Project 2025,Ƶ ƵSend Musk to Mars,Ƶ ƵHands Off My Social SecurityƵ and ƵReject Fascism Defend Equality.Ƶ
Megan ClevengerƵs cardboard sign said ƵI donƵt like this episode of Black Mirror,Ƶ a dystopian television drama.
Clevenger, of Charleston, said she sees parallels to the TV show as society and government are Ƶgoing backwards,Ƶ especially when it comes to the rights of the LGBTQ community, to which she said she belongs.
ƵI would like to just spread awareness. I was waiting for a protest, so as soon as I [saw] it, I was like ƵI have to go out and support everybody in this community here,ƵƵ she said.
Delegate Mike Pushkin, D-Kanawha, who attended the event, said the protestors may not agree on every issue, but Ƶone thing we do agree on is that weƵre going down the wrong road, and that we can do better, and we need to do better.Ƶ
Damian Herrada came from Summersville with homemade signs about diversity, equity and inclusion and immigrants, LGBTQ and womenƵs rights.
Herrada said he was concerned for the families of those being deported and for people like his brother.
ƵMy brother, heƵs autistic. If it wasnƵt for a lot of help that he got in school, heƵd probably be dead right now,Ƶ Herrada said. ƵThe last thing we need to do is dismantle the Department of Education.Ƶ
Fears of deportation
The three Olivares sisters from South Charleston came to protest the deportation of undocumented immigrants, and fight for the rights of an undocumented relative whoƵs lived in the country for 25 years. They wore Mexican flags or blankets and a sombrero.

ƵIƵve seen the mass deportations. IƵve seen people in fear not wanting to go to work,Ƶ said Nevaeh Olivares. ƵIƵm scared for my family.Ƶ
Illana Olivares said she and her sisters had been ƵdehumanizedƵ because of their race. She said she wished people would look at more than her relativeƵs race.
ƵItƵs just hard that people hate him just [because] he cannot speak English and because of what he looks like,Ƶ said Illana Olivares. ƵThatƵs why IƵm here today Ƶ to show people that he ... has a right to be here just as everyone else.Ƶ

Protestor DL Hamilton, 71, said she couldnƵt believe she was feeling threatened by Ƶauthoritarianism in the United States.Ƶ SheƵs been protesting since high school, when she was allowed to drive from Oak Hill to Charleston for the first time for a protest against the Vietnam War.
On the steps of the Capitol, she set up an Ƶindigenous-inspired altarƵ representing the elements of earth, air, fire and water. Some of her signs mentioned Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., and Republican Gov. Patrick Morrisey.
Hamilton cried as she said she felt her voice was not wanted and wouldnƵt be heard in the statehouse.
ƵI just feel that Donald Trump, Jim Justice and Morrisey have some kind of agenda that does not have the earth or the people in mind,Ƶ she said. ƵThey just do not care about this land or about West Virginia or about really anything other than their own power, glory and manipulation.Ƶ

ƵI have nothing that would really make me lose sleep at night,Ƶ he said. ƵI have the perfect ability to come here and to be able to fight for other people because other people canƵt fight for themselves.Ƶ
