Traffic passes across the Sgt. Jackie Waymire Bridge, which connects W.Va. 2 and 3rd Avenue, on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, in Huntington. The West Virginia Division of Highways began work on the bridge this week.

HUNTINGTON òòò½ÊÓƵ” The West Virginia Division of Highways is advertising for bids to clean and paint the Sgt. Jackie L. Waymire Memorial Bridge carrying 3rd Avenue over the Guyandotte River in Huntington. Bids will be opened at the DoH office in Charleston on July 16.

The bridge is named for Sgt. Jackie L. Waymire, a Huntington native who was killed in action in the Vietnam War on Jan. 9, 1967. When Waymireòòò½ÊÓƵ™s base camp came under fire from the Viet Cong, he led his platoon on an assault against the insurgent flank. Waymore killed three enemy combatants before he was fatally wounded. Waymire was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest military decoration for display heroism in combat.
