ƵRead Across the River Cities is one of our favorite events of the year,Ƶ Jedd Flowers, UWRCƵs executive director, said in the release. ƵOver the past two years, thousands of third graders have experienced the presence of caring volunteers in their classrooms in hopes of promoting a love of reading.Ƶ
According to the release, last year, more than 300 volunteers read to students in 137 classrooms. This year, about 126 of 132 volunteer slots were filled in Cabell County where the largest number of schools were involved at over 20, according to UWRCƵs sign-up
Schools in Cabell, Lincoln, Wayne and Mason counties were involved in West Virginia, and schools in Gallia and Lawrence counties were involved in Ohio, with more than 280 volunteer slots filled in total, according to the website.
ƵLiteracy, of course, is part of our strategic plan. ItƵs something that schoolƵs always working on,Ƶ Nona Newsome, principal at Crum PK-8 in Wayne County, said Tuesday after volunteers read to the students. ƵSo anything that we can do to encourage literacy for our students, weƵre absolutely enthusiastic about and we appreciate those of you volunteering to come out and read to our kids.Ƶ
