Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this yearƵs Male Gamer of the Year award to Ty Steorts of Hurricane Cross Country and Track and Field.
The senior distance runner just wrapped up his season winning the 3200m in a time of 9:11 and 1600m in a new state meet record time of 4:06.34. This performance is coming off of a fall cross country season where he won the state championship by 25 seconds in a time of 15:11.48.
ƵNot sure how to even put into words how valuable Ty has been to the Cross Country and Track programs at Hurricane High School. To say heƵs left his mark on the program would be a major understatement. IƵve had the privilege of coaching him for last seven years. I always knew he was something special in middle school, but when he came to high school he really came into his own. He is a great athlete and kid, and has taken his leadership to the next level this year,Ƶ said head coach Jimmy Cunningham.
Steorts finished second his freshman year and then went on to win three-straight ƵSSAC state cross-country championships. He led Hurricane to a runner up finish at the 2022 state cross country meet.
In track and field, he has won five individual event titles alongside many other all-state performances during his career. He helped lead Hurricane to a runner-up finish at the 2024 and 2025 state track and field meet.
Steorts has also performed well outside of the state: running 8:24 to win the 3000m at the Penn Relays in 2024, a personal best 8:54 in the 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational in 2025, and in cross country winning the Adidas XC Challenge, Louisville XC Classic, and placing 2nd in Nike Cross South East Regional.
ƵI just like to compete and go to big races to get my name out there. The main goal for me in high school was to be able to continue competing at the next level. I am ending up at my dream school, so I am really happy with how my high school career went,Ƶ said Steorts. He will be competing for the Tennessee Volunteers this fall, and plans to study business analytics.
When discussing people who have helped him along the way, Steorts said, ƵMy mom and dad have been a huge part of this process, Ricky and Johnny Truex over at Nike elite for letting me be part of their development program, my teammates, and definitely my high school coaches Jimmy Cunningham and Jonathan Fee. It has been a real blessing having the support and great coaches around me.Ƶ
Please look for other local high school athletes to be named Male Gamer of the Week this coming fall, sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
