Teays Physical Therapy Center, Inc. and The Putnam Herald are pleased to present this weekƵs Male Gamer of the Week award to John David Humphrey of St. Albans Swimming.
Humphrey has been having a standout season for St. Albans Swimming. The junior won the Mountain State Athletic Conference Meet in the 100-yard back stroke in a time of 54.58 and placed 2nd in the 100-yard breast stroke in a time of 1:03.61.
ƵThe season has been going well, times have been dropping and thatƵs what youƵre looking for,Ƶ said Humphrey.
Humphrey earned all-state honors in 2024 for his 2nd-place performance in the 100-yard back stroke at the ƵSSAC Championships.
ƵWhile I could highlight the results weƵve seen in the pool, his achievements in the classroom are equally impressive. He goes above and beyond for his classmates and teammates. Ƶ a coach, hearing other coaches and parents speak about him for his actions outside the pool means just as much to me,Ƶ said head swim coach Christian Watts.
Humphrey credits his mom for getting him and his older sisters into swimming when they were young. He says he likes the competitiveness of the sport and the environment where most people in the sport are friendly. When discussing people who have helped him along the way, he pointed to his coaches and University of Kentucky Swimmer, Bradley Boyd, whom he considers a role model.
When discussing Humphrey, coach Watts said, ƵHaving coached his three older sisters, IƵve watched him grow up around the pool. He has a natural ability, but what most people donƵt see is his dedication. He swims six days a week and spends an additional two hours in the weight room every single day. His accomplishments are not by accident; he has truly earned everything he has achieved through hard work.Ƶ
Humphrey will be back in action Feb. 20-21 for the state meet at Mylan Park Aquatics Center in Morgantown.
Please look for other local high school athletes to be named in next weekƵs male Gamer of the Week, sponsored by Teays Physical Therapy Center Inc., and The Putnam Herald.
