HUNTINGTON Ƶ Upgrades to HuntingtonƵs Prindle Field are moving along.
Improvements to turn the cityƵs underutilized Prindle Field into a vibrant place for children, adults and animals move forward, Executive Director Kathy McKenna said during the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District (GHPRD) board meeting Wednesday.
Prindle Field improvements are continuing with Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. working on storm water retention for the parking area, McKenna said. Color coding for the asphalt Ƶ which helps differentiate areas, improve wayfinding and reduce surface temperatures Ƶ will start later in the summer, she said.
So far, the concrete for the courtyard has been laid and a water line for the dog parkƵs water fountain has been installed. McKenna said she is still working on raising more funds for future work on the project. McKenna said she submitted a $5 million grant request to West Virginia Water Development Authority and a separate donation request from a private foundation that has supported the parkƵs endeavors in the past.
She hopes the private foundation can help with $300,000 of the project to purchase the challenge course for Prindle Field. McKenna said GHPRD will continue to seek other grants for the project.
Before the project started, Prindle FieldƵs two ballfields with open green space was the focus of the area with a ƵmakeshiftƵ dog park. Planned Prindle Field improvements include a dog park, basketball court, a challenge course, sidewalks and lighting.
In other business, work has continued on benches in Ritter Park after a large limb came down two weeks ago. McKenna said repairs are being made and workers will evaluate the tree to determine if it can be salvaged.
The board approved the executive director to enter into an agreement with the City of Huntington for the operation, management and programming for the Harris Riverfront Park for July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2026. McKenna said the contract is the same as the previous years.
