PEDRO, Ohio Ƶ Four prescribed burns are scheduled for more than 1,000 acres in the Wayne National Forest land in Lawrence and Gallia counties.
Three of the prescribed Ƶ or intentional Ƶ burns in the Ironton Ranger District of the national forest are in Symmes Township, according to a release.
The first two prescribed burns are on 595 acres near Waterloo Road. The third prescribed burn is set for 251 acres near Johns Creek Road.
The prescribed burn in Gallia County is set for 162 acres in Perry Township near Woodside Road, according to the release.
ƵPrescribed fire was first used by indigenous people to steward the forest and remains a valuable tool for maintaining a diverse forest,Ƶ said Wayne National Forest Supervisor Lee Stewart.
ƵƵ forestry and technical professionals, we have a duty to actively steward the national forest,Ƶ he said. ƵThe trees that grow after a prescribed burn, especially the oak species, are the future of our forestƵs ecosystem.Ƶ
ƵOur fire management professionals plan and implement these burning operations to ensure we achieve our ecological objectives in a safe manner,Ƶ Stewart said.
Depending on weather, terrain and fuel conditions, fire crews could use ground-based or aerial ignition methods to conduct the prescribed burn, according to the release.
The prescribed burns were scheduled earlier this summer, but were delayed due to drought conditions, according to the release.
