HUNTINGTON Ƶ A hawkƵs nest was recently spotted in Ritter Park, drawing the attention of those using the playground or walking trail.
It is not uncommon for a hawk to be in a more residential area, says Ron Perrone, education director at the Three Rivers Avian Center in Hinton, West Virginia, and people in the area should not be worried about the hawk being dangerous. However, they are advised to stay away from the nest because the hawk could swoop down and to scare off people if it thinks its babies are in trouble.
ƵCity hawks are city hawks, theyƵve learned to adapt,Ƶ Perrone said. ƵThey donƵt care about people, they ignore us.Ƶ
The birds are red-shouldered hawks, according to Perrone.
Perrone said a misconception about these birds is that they are aggressive animals. But really, they are just hunting birds and, in his words, Ƶhumans arenƵt on the menu.Ƶ
Local residents have found it interesting to see a hawk in the area.
ƵA few times IƵve seen it grab a squirrel or two. ItƵs actually pretty cool to see, believe it or not,Ƶ said Michael Wellman, who was in the park Monday.
