HUNTINGTON Ƶ Marshall University announced the creation of a Ƶprosperity hubƵ within its Innovation District on Tuesday as part of a partnership with Intuit that President Brad D. Smith said will bring 250 jobs to the community.
According to Smith, the partnership will create a Ƶtalent pipeline,Ƶ creating year-round employment opportunities for students and graduates, giving them real-world experience working with a leading technology company.
The jobs, he said, will range from internships to full-time positions starting at $18 an hour and include bookkeeping, tax preparation, working with artificial intelligence and Ƶhelping small businesses and families navigate their financial lives and ultimately make better decisions, which will help them live a prosperous life.Ƶ
Smith said the hub, which will host these positions, will be located within the Innovation District, now called the IDEA District (Impossible DoesnƵt Exist Anymore) on 4th Avenue between the new Institute for Cyber Security and the Lewis College of Business.
Marshall will also incorporate IntuitƵs personal and entrepreneurial financial content into MarshallƵs First Year Experience and Name Image Likeness programs and peer-to-peer networking.
For example, the company will support MarshallƵs NIL program through the athletic department by helping those students who are earning money understand how to manage it, and the responsibility that comes with the funds, explained Dave Zasada, vice president of education and corporate responsibility at Intuit.
ƵIntuit is actually partnering with Marshall campus-wide to really address the issue of students having financial stress. Financial stress actually is one of the top two reasons why students drop out of college, typically with lots of debt and with no degree to show for it,Ƶ Zasada said following the announcement.
ƵBy educating students how to become more financially literate, not only will we help improve their chances of actually graduating, but also [prepare] them for a life where they will actually be much more successful managing their finances.Ƶ
Zasada said IntuitƵs content will be integrated into the universityƵs programs starting next year.
The Intuit internships began March 1 with a first cohort of 30 students, which will conclude in April, according to Tricia Ball, executive director of MarshallƵs Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Smith said the number could increase to 250 employees by next year.
Opportunities like those being provided through Intuit, Smith said, could help show students they can find work with Ƶworld-class companiesƵ without leaving the state, while also enticing more companies to come to Huntington.
ƵThis will absolutely lead to other kinds of partnerships. WeƵre already in conversations with other companies whose names you would recognize,Ƶ Smith said.
David Graham, senior vice president of the Intuit Expert Network, said Intuit has Ƶprosperity hubsƵ all over the country, although this will be the first in an educational institution. He said Intuit already has a team that will train Marshall students on the work theyƵll be doing.
