MORGANTOWN òòò½ÊÓÆµ” Local high schools have been invited to compete at the West Virginia regional competition of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scienceòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s National Science Bowl on Saturday at the Mountainlair on the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown.
This yearòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s competition marks the 34th designed by the Department of Energy for youth interested in science and math, according to a press release issued by the Department of Energy Office.
The top two high school teams will win $5,000 to go toward their schoolsòòò½ÊÓÆµ™ math and science departments. Schools placing in the top 16 will win $1,000 for their schoolsòòò½ÊÓÆµ™ science departments.
The winning team will move onto the all-expenses-paid finale April 25-29 in Washington, D.C. According to the release, the event will include science activities and sightseeing opportunities for those in attendance.
The competition tests studentsòòò½ÊÓÆµ™ knowledge in biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy and math.
Teams are composed of four students from middle and high schools across the country.
West Virginia high schools competing at the regional include Bluefield, Central Catholic, Clay County, Fairmont Senior, George Washington, Grafton, Herbert Hoover, Huntington, John Marshall, Morgantown, Oak Glen, Oak Hill, Parkersburg, Pikeview, Ripley, Saint Albans, University, Wheeling Park, Williamstown and Woodrow Wilson.
