Allen C. Adkins, 34, was charged with voluntary manslaughter last month in connection with the death of Lonnie Smith, another inmate at Western Regional Jail, who died in May.
According to a police report provided by the Cabell County Magistrate ClerkƵs office, a West Virginia State Police trooper was advised of an assault that had occurred at Western Regional Jail between two inmates on May 11 that resulted in one inmateƵs death.

Adkins told police he and Smith had a Ƶpretty goodƵ relationship, according to the report, but said the two became frustrated when Adkins hit Smith and Smith passed out.
A hearing was scheduled for Adkins in Cabell County Magistrate Court on Tuesday, which was continued to 10:30 a.m. July 22.
According to a sentencing order from January, Adkins entered a guilty plea to the felony offense of burglary and was sentenced to one to 15 years in the Western Regional Jail, where heƵs currently being held.
