WAYNE Ƶ Ƶ neighbors, friends and loved ones mourn the loss of and honor the memory of 16-year-old Wayne High School student Gavin Daniels, who died last week, people are also banding together to help his family.
Gavin was a student and football player at Wayne High School who died last Thursday at Cabell Huntington Hospital, according to his obituary from Morris Funeral Home.
Cpl. J.J. Dean with the Wayne detachment of the West Virginia State Police said a 16-year-old died last Thursday when they sustained life-threatening injuries after a revolver he had asked to see discharged when shown to him.
The teen was taken to a hospital, but did not survive his injuries, Dean said.
Ƶ of Tuesday afternoon, the incident was still under investigation, and no charges had been pressed, according to Dean.
According to his obituary, Gavin was a junior at Wayne High School and a member of the Wayne Pioneer football team.
ƵGavin loved the game and spent countless hours in the weight room and conditioning for the upcoming season,Ƶ it reads. ƵHis leadership on the field was recognized by his coaches, peers and younger brothers whom he enjoyed watching play.Ƶ
His funeral is set for Saturday.
On Thursday, WHS Greenhouse and FFA will have a fundraiser in honor of Gavin, with all proceeds to go to his family.
Caleb Dyer, agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Wayne High School, said proceeds from ThursdayƵs WHS Greenhouse sales from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be donated. Gavin himself was an FFA student.
Dyer said students grow and sell the plants, which include bedding flowers, hanging baskets and garden plants. Cash is the preferred method of payment for the plants, but people could also pay by check if needed, according to Dyer.
GiovanniƵs of Lavalette hosted a Giveback Day in memory of Gavin last Saturday, donating 20% of all sales to his family.
A GoFundMe is also open to help GavinƵs family in his memory at . Ƶ of Tuesday, nearly $14,000 had been raised.
