HUNTINGTON Ƶ The Religious Coalition for Community Renewal (RCCR) and Fifth Third Bank held their Summer of Financial Empowerment event in Huntington on Thursday to provide financial education to community members.
Fifth Third Bank brought its Financial Empowerment Mobile, also known as the eBus, to the RCCR building, at 1018 6th Ave. in Huntington.
ƵThe goal is to bring this into underserved communities and give them access to financial information that they may not have otherwise had,Ƶ said Brian Lake, retail regional manager for Fifth Third Bank. ƵWhat we found is that the foundation of financial success and taking those steps is to build up some credit, so here, our first step is to look at their credit report.Ƶ
Lake said once people understand their credit reports, they can start addressing items on the report that could need addressed.
ƵThe most common issue we see is that people have things on their credit report that are from the past that theyƵve either forgotten about or just donƵt know how to tackle solving whatƵs on there,Ƶ Lake said. ƵBy looking at their credit report, understanding whatƵs on there, we can help them make a plan to address whatƵs on there and set them up for future success.Ƶ
In addition to Fifth Third BankƵs credit counseling, the RCCR provided further education about affordable housing and home ownership. The RCCR can also provide resource information for educational and transportation assistance.
ƵOnce you have credit, what does that look like for you? Where can we go from here? And if youƵre looking for home ownership, how do you get into the process?Ƶ said Erin Adair, housing counselor for the RCCR.
Adair said many of the people who come to them often do not know where to begin and the RCCRƵs goal is to set them on the right path.
ƵItƵs, ƵWhere do I begin? How do I even read a credit report, or how do I even start with home ownership?Ƶ We give them all the tools and get them set up and geared up, ready to go,Ƶ Adair said.
The RCCR is also looking at expanding their operations beyond education and financial literacy.
ƵWeƵre also looking at expanding into building new homes and renovating homes and neighborhoods locally, right here in the area,Ƶ Adair said.
