HUNTINGTON òòò½ÊÓÆµ” The Cabell County Board of Education is looking for applicants to fill the vacant seat previously held by Reed Byers, who resigned Wednesday.
The new board member must be from either District 1 or 3, as there are already two members from District 2 and only two representatives from a district can serve on the Board of Education at the same time.
The newly appointed member would serve until the next election in May 2026.
Districts 1 and 3 include Union Magisterial District and parts of Milton, Barboursville, Guyandotte, Gideon, Huntington and Kyle districts. Individuals wishing to be considered for the vacancy must submit a written notice of interest, along with qualifications, experience and references to Superintendent Tim Hardesty by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Notices may be hand-delivered to Hardesty’s office at 2850 5th Ave., emailed to thardest@k12.wv.us, or sent to the office by mail.
All notices must be received by Nov. 27.
The board will review the applications, and interviews may be conducted at the boardòòò½ÊÓÆµ™s discretion. The board will take a vote on who the new member should be during its regular meeting at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 3.
Before being appointed, the new board member must:
Be a resident of Cabell County
Not be a teacher or service personnel already serving in the school district
Not be holding another public office or a member of any party executive committee or a candidate for any other public office
Not become a candidate for or serve as a delegate, alternate or proxy at a national political party convention
Possess at least a high school diploma or GED/TASC diploma

Hardesty said Thursday that he has already received a few applications, and if necessary, he may schedule a special meeting for Monday, Dec. 2. If interviews are not completed before Dec. 2 or Dec. 3, the vote would be pushed to a following meeting.
