HUNTINGTON Ƶ American Legion Post 16 held its yearly flag retirement ceremony Sunday.
The ceremony saw about 500 flags retired.
Fred Buchanan, the adjutant for Post 16, said about 35 people attended the event, which was fewer than expected.
The event is typically scheduled on or around Flag Day, which was June 14. Buchanan said this yearƵs event was later because of scheduling conflicts.
The event is an opportunity to teach people how to retire a flag properly. Buchanan said the post has received numerous calls to retrieve worn-down flags. Most callers said they did not know what to do with the flag.
Buchanon said the decision to hold one ceremony a year makes it more meaningful.
ƵItƵs not just a piece of cloth,Ƶ Buchanan said. ƵPeople died for the flag, and we need to honor it. If you do it weekly, itƵs just another ceremony.Ƶ
