HUNTINGTON Ƶ The West Edge Factory arts and music hub in Huntington is hosting an art exhibit over the coming weeks that is best described as the Tiny Art Show.
In a world where miniatures are still collected and made, the name of this exhibit has been used to spark a different kind of art of a very small nature made by Tri-State artists. One of the highlights of the presentation will be various ƵZeitgeistƵ doll houses filled with miniature art created by more than 70 different artists that will be on display.
The Opening Night for the Tiny Art Show happens this evening, Thursday, July 10, with a Petite Poetry Reading at 6 p.m. followed by the official Gallery Opening Reception that will run from 7 to 9 p.m. The event is free to the public at the West Edge Factory, at 1040 Vernon St. in Huntington.
Sassa Wilkes is the director of creative placemaking for the Coalfield Development organization, which runs the West Edge Factory arts and music venue.
ƵThis exhibit will feature 18 artists, although there is more to the story,Ƶ Wilkes said. ƵThree of the pieces that will be on display are doll houses created by a Charleston artist named Ellie Schaul and inside of her three doll houses is art made by about 75 artists. All of the individual art pieces inside the reconfigured doll houses are amazing and definitely are one of the highlights of this show. They are called ƵZeitgeist Houses.ƵƵ
Wilkes said Schaul grew up in Massachusetts before moving to West Virginia, and SchaulƵs miniature art works began in 1984.
ƵShe has worked on the houses and collected art to put in them for years, and she also ran the art store in Charleston for over two decades,Ƶ Wilkes said.
The three houses have been put on pedestals and covered by clear plexiglass so they will not be disturbed, yet everything inside of the Zeitgeist Houses is in full view.
ƵThese houses are incredible, and you have to see them in person to appreciate them,Ƶ Wilkes said. ƵThe front of the houses are open so that you can look in and see the art, which has been installed inside in certain places so you can see them through different views, both from the front and through different well-placed windows. It even includes hand-painted wallpaper.Ƶ
The Tiny Art Show will also feature work from the following artists, among others:
Joel Dugan
Mary Roy
Sugarpop Press
Jason Kiley
Amy Pabst
Joe Public Press
Fierce Sonia
Barb Lavalley
