APPOINTED: Congratulations to Dr. Corley Dennison who was appointed on April 7 as interim president at the Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College in Logan. He currently serves as vice chancellor emeritus for Academic Affairs at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. Dennison has decades of experience in higher education leadership, teaching, and administration as he recently retired from a 29-year career at Marshall University. He received his bachelorƵs degree from James Madison University, his masterƵs degree from Northwest Missouri State University, and his doctorate from West Virginia University. Dennison and his wife, Betty, live in Ona.
CANTATA: Several local musicians Ƶ Sara Boyd, Maggie Chenoweth, Reverend Al Flaitz, Stefanie Flouhouse, Kayley Glover, Heather Glover, Mallory Mount and Allen Smith Ƶ shared their time and talents by playing their musical instruments for an Easter cantata presented last Sunday at Pea Ridge United Methodist Church by a community choir from Barboursville Baptist Church, Barboursville First United Methodist Church, Steele Memorial United Methodist Church, Hope Christian Center and Pea Ridge United Methodist Church. Trina Smith was the director.
100TH: This Sunday, April 20, the congregation of Kuhn Memorial Presbyterian Church and the minister, the Rev. Cinda Harkless, invite the public to join them to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the dedication of its chapel. The church was established in 1914 and reached this milestone on April 19, 2025. The anniversary will be celebrated with a time of fellowship and refreshments after the worship service on Sunday.
SUNRISE: An Easter sunrise service will be offered at 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, at Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 2508 Merritts Creek Road, Huntington. Sunday School classes begin at 9:55 a.m. and a cantata, ƵGlory in the Cross,Ƶ will be presented during the morning worship service at 11 a.m. Lisa Meadows is the choir director. Pastor Gordon Rutherford will deliver the morning message following the cantata. There will be no evening service.
SUPPORT: Congratulations to Tom Chaffin and Rhonda Smalley, retired band directors from Spring Valley High School and Cabell Midland High School respectively, who were recognized for their dedication and support of music in these schools during the festivities of the All-Area Band concert which was held recently at Huntington High School. It was stated that the impact of their work is felt throughout the region in the love of music instilled in their former students who now lead music programs in the area.
MEETING: The Westmoreland Neighborhood Ƶsociation will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 21, at the Westmoreland WomanƵs Club building, 2962 Bradley Road, Huntington, behind the former Camden Road United Bank. The program for the meeting is ƵProtecting Our Neighborhoods, Preserving our Housing.Ƶ The guest speaker, T. R. Bocook, housing inspector with the Rental Registry of Huntington, will explain the registry process and sanctions for non-compliance. Melissa Kilgore, code enforcement officer for the Westmoreland area, will be introduced.
