The Huntington Symphony OrchestraƵs first Picnic with the Pops of the season, Symphonique 54 Disco Spectacular featuring the Boogie Wonder Band, takes place on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the Barboursville Park Amphitheater.
BARBOURSVILLE Ƶ More than 50 years since releasing its first set-titled album in 1973, when it comes to the greater worldwide music community, the British rock group Queen is still considered one of the best rock bands in history.
The Huntington Symphony Orchestra, with a rock band performing with them, will carry on the legacy of the band with a performance of ƵThe Music Of Queen Ƶ A Rock SymphonyƵ at Barboursville Park at 7:30 p.m Saturday.
Tickets can be purchased at or at the orchestra office, 763 3rd Ave., in downtown Huntington.
General admission tickets, where patrons bring their own blankets or lawn chairs, are $30 for adults and $15 for kids age 13 and under. Tickets for reserved seating, with chairs provided in a special section, are available for $45. Table seating tickets, where tables of 8 to 10 seats are reserved, have sold out.
ƵThe music of Queen really bridges the gulf between classical and rock music,Ƶ said Ian Jessee, executive director of the Huntington Symphony Orchestra. ƵThe arranger of these Queen songs for orchestra were done by Brent Havens and he has put together this wonderful listening experience that we will present on Saturday. It captures a lot of the distinct sounds of Queen while using a symphony orchestra and a rock band that will be playing with us.Ƶ
Opening up the show will be the group Souls Of The Wounded.
Performing with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra will be the Windborne Productions band. The organization has been combining classic rock music with full orchestras since the 1990s.
Also performing with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra for this outdoor extravaganza will be MiG Ayesa on vocals; Dan Clemens on bass; Powell Randolph on drums; George Cintron on the guitar; and Justin Avery on keyboards.
This will be the first of three big outdoor concerts that will be presented by the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, and three totally different genres of music will be the focus of each performance.
The symphony will have a Red White and Bluegrass performance at 7:30 p.m. July 3 at Harris Riverfront Park.
ƵThat Red, White and Bluegrass performance ... it will feature an amazing talent in the West Virginia-based mandolin player Johnny Staats. He is a wonderful man and so good at his craft and it will be great to celebrate the music of our region,Ƶ Jessee said.
The symphony will also perform Give Our Regards Ƶ Great Duets of the Stage, which features Broadway music, at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16.
ƵOur symphony is thrilled to be able to present rock music, bluegrass and Broadway, all in one summer,Ƶ Jessee said.
