ASHLAND Ƶ Whether itƵs a pumpkin pie, French pastry, cupcake or cream horn, itƵs hard to go wrong with a holiday treat from TiptonƵs Traditions Bakery.
Currently located at 15th Street in Ƶhland, the roots of TiptonƵs traditions date back to Tom Tipton, who started a family bakery with his brother Julius in Ironton in 1935.
The bakery has thrived across four different generations of the family, with the most-recent incarnation opening its doors in Ƶhland in 2017.
ƵItƵs funny because it was originally called Tipton Brothers Bakery, but all of the brothers had daughters. My dad Tom Tipton Jr. was the only boy that was born, and he had all daughters. Tom Tipton Jr. and his wife Dottie inherited the business, then it was mine. So the bakeryƵs name was shortened to TiptonƵs. It eventually became part of a supermarket that closed in 2003,Ƶ said Tammy Tipton Vogelsong, owner and cake decorator. ƵI ran a cake-decorating business out of the back of my house from 2003 until 2017. My husband built a commercial kitchen. It wasnƵt meant to be in the house for very long, but it was there for 15 years while we looked for a place to move the business. We have three generations of cake decorators: my mom, me, and my daughter Madison Vogelsong Cook. My son Tyler Whaley is also a partner with me. I changed the name to TiptonƵs Traditions because we continue on the tradition.Ƶ
The bakery sells a variety of sweet treats, but the cakes are their stars, Tipton Vogelsong said.
ƵCakes are the crown jewel of our business. We are really known for the cakes and the artwork. We have pastries, as well. We are known for our cream horns, our French pastries, our chocolate eclairs, and our croissants,Ƶ she said. ƵWe also have cookies like bonbons and things. We have about 10 items that are exactly the same since the 1930s. Of course, we always have brownies and peanut butter bars. Me and my daughter are known for our cake artwork. IƵm known for drawing on cakes and she is known for her sculptures.Ƶ
Customers looking to grab a quick snack at Tiptons can enjoy cupcakes ($1.50-$3 each), cream horns ($3) French pastry ($2.50), cherry sticks ($2.50), or a croissant ($3). Customers can order custom cakes starting at $25-$35.
Customers can also order custom pies in flavors such as apple, cherry and pumpkin.
ƵWe got kind of wiped out during Thanksgiving. It was crazy here on Thanksgiving. We still had people lined up outside the door on Black Friday,Ƶ Tipton Vogelsong said.
